UK’s Graduate Visa: What The MAC Report Says and What Happens Now?
You might have heard that earlier this year the UK Government requested a review of the Graduate Visa (the UK’s post-study work visa) by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC).
So, what does the MAC report say and what does it mean for international students wanting to study in the UK going forward?
Update!
The UK Government have said that no changes will be made to the Graduate Route visa. This means, students can continue to apply to stay for two or three years (depending on your course) after graduation.
However, the government have said that they will be continue to review the state of student immigration and focus on making sure agents and institutions adhere to regulations.
We'll keep you updated on any new developments.
Outcome of the MAC report
The Committee was asked to look into the Graduate Visa to make sure the immigration route is working as intended. The MAC has said that the Graduate Route ‘serves the purpose for which it was developed’ and has suggested that the visa should be retained in it’s ‘current form’.
The report reads, “The Graduate route has broadly achieved, and continues to achieve, the objectives set by the government.”
The MAC report is being celebrated by many in the UK higher education sector with Vivienne Stern, Chief Executive of Universities UK, telling The PIE News that the MAC’s recommendation is “extremely important and welcome”.
What will happen next?
We understand the uncertainty that this review has caused many international students looking to study in the UK.
The MAC’s support of the Graduate Route is definitely a positive, however, the UK Government is yet to respond. We’ll keep you updated with any announcements and changes made.
Until that time, the Graduate Visa continues to give existing and aspiring students two- or three-years post-graduation (depending on your degree) to stay and look for work in the UK.
