We've been helping students find the right postgraduate course for over a decade.
With around 1,200 universities, China is one of the world’s emerging academic powerhouses. It’s also a popular international postgraduate destination, hosting almost 140,000 foreign students.
The Chinese government is committed to improving its higher education system and has committed a great deal of funding in recent years. Their financial backing has translated into success in global rankings, and this page provides a summary of China’s performance in the three main league tables.
The following table lists the best 20 universities in China in 2019, according to global rankings.
Each ranking system uses its own methodology, with different factors having more or less influence on a university's result.

International rankings use all sorts of metrics to assess universities and they aren't all equally relevant to postgraduate study. That's why we've put together a guide to university rankings for Masters students.
As you can see, Chinese universities perform impressively across all three major ranking systems, with several institutions appearing in the global top 200. There’s good strength in depth, too – all 20 Chinese universities are in at least the top 600, depending on which league table you’re looking at.
It’s also worth consulting region-specific ranking systems, such as the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings. This particular league table ‘recalibrates’ the metrics used by global rankings to give a clearer idea of Asian universities’ position relative to each other. Chinese universities also perform well here, with nine institutions in the top 50.
