Scholarship details

These bursaries are designed to support students with living costs and are supported via the FOSTER programme.

Please consider applying for the bursary if:

- you already have an offer to start the MSc Fusion Energy Science and Technologies course in September 2026, but it is difficult for you to accept the offer due to financial constraints; or
- you haven't yet applied to the MSc Fusion Energy Science and Technologies course due to financial constraints (to be considered for the bursary you will need to hold an offer by 19 August 2026 – we would therefore recommend you apply for the course as soon as possible).

Open to UK (home) students only.

To be considered for this bursary you must have a conditional or unconditional offer to study the MSc Fusion Energy Science and Technologies at the University of York starting on 21 September 2026.

The primary aim of this bursary scheme is to improve the diversity of the fusion workforce.

We particularly encourage bursary applications from applicants who identify as women, are care leavers/care experienced, have a disability (including long-term health conditions) or are from Black, Asian and Minority ethnic backgrounds, as all these groups are underrepresented within the MSc Fusion Energy Science and Technologies course.

This is a competitive process. Bursary applications will be assessed by a panel of University of York staff based on:

- the applicant’s interest in fusion energy and understanding of its societal importance
- the panel’s evaluation of the personal statement provided
- the extent to which the applicant meets this bursary scheme’s priority underrepresented characteristics.

If the bursary scheme is oversubscribed (or undersubscribed) the panel can also consider applicants’ previous academic outcomes.
