Scholarship details
The Germany Scholarship supports undergraduate and postgraduate students whose academic and professional backgrounds suggest outstanding achievements. They receive €300 per month – half from the federal government and the other half from private donors. This combination of civic engagement and government funding is what makes the Germany Scholarship so special.
The concept of merit underlying the scholarship is deliberately broad: good grades and academic performance are just as important as a willingness to take on responsibility or successfully overcoming obstacles in one's personal and educational path. In North Rhine-Westphalia, a total of around 50 universities award Germany Scholarships.
Who can apply:
- You must be enrolled in a degree programme (usually Bachelor or consecutive Master) at a German university or already accepted and about to start studies
- Students of all nationalities can apply
- You must usually be within the standard period of study for your programme (exceptions can apply for special reasons like a stay abroad or childcare)

- Most universities open the application once per year, usually: June–August (for funding starting in October), or sometimes December–January (less common)
2. Submit an online application
Applications are usually submitted via the university’s online portal. You typically need to upload:
- Application form (online)

- Transcript of records or school certificate (for first-semester students)
- Motivation statement (why you deserve the scholarship)
- Proof of extracurricular / social engagement (certificates, references)
- Sometimes: letter(s) of recommendation (not always mandatory)
Financial documents are not required, as the scholarship is merit-based.
