The Colonel Michael Hefferon Memorial Scholarship in History will be awarded to a student registered to one of the UCD School of History’s MA programmes. The scholarship has been made possible as a result of a generous bequest to support the research of modern history and specifically to promote the use of archival sources held in the (opens in a new window)Irish Military Archives. This archive is the official place of deposit for records of the defence forces and the Department of Defence. Its collections span the last 100 years and include invaluable material on the War of Independence, Irish Civil War and the aftermath of the revolutionary period, as revealed in one of its largest collections: the files of the Military Service Pensions Collection which open windows on to not just military history, but political, social, economic, cultural, medical and gender history. The recipient of the scholarship will be required to make extensive use of
these archival sources.
