As a postgraduate student at UCLan, you will experience high-quality, research-informed teaching by dedicated and well-qualified academic staff. In 2010, UCLan became the first modern university to enter the prestigious QS World University Rankings, and in a separate, more detailed analysis, the QS Stars Development Road Map, UCLan was awarded the maximum five stars for the quality of its teaching provision. UCLan offers a truly international experience - we have students and researchers from over 120 countries and over 125 partnerships with other institutions across the globe.
As a result of our close links with over 100 employers including BAE Systems, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Samsung, Cisco, the NHS and NASA, we understand what employers are looking for. UCLan's Careers centre brings together advice on careers and work placements, employability and enterprise course electives, business start-up and self-employment services.
UCLan is a top UK university for entrepreneurship. The Propeller enterprise hub offers business start-up support to students and graduates, including skills and knowledge workshops, networking opportunities and business incubation space. UCLan is ranked fourth in the UK for the number of graduate start-up businesses created (according to analysis of 2017/18 data provided by HESA).
In recent years, UCLan has invested over £100 million in new buildings and facilities to enhance teaching, learning and leisure activities: the £13 million Olympic-standard Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre; the £12.5 million JB Firth building, which houses the University's renowned forensic science, chemistry and fire engineering courses; the £5.3 million Allen Building which includes the School of Dentistry and the School of Medicine; and the £15 million 'Media Factory' which incorporates state-of-the-art facilities for digital media and performing arts students and business incubator facilities. A state-of-the-art Engineering Innovation Centre, has recently opened as part of a £200 million Master Plan, and the new Student Centre is well underway.
UCLan is in Preston in North West England, a rich and culturally diverse place to study.
Our Campus Masterplan is set to draw the city and campus even closer together, creating new green public spaces and improving access for pedestrians and cyclists. With traditional and contemporary shopping experiences, a thriving café culture and busy yet safe evening social scene, Preston also boasts beautiful parks, culturally-important museums and a thriving marina and docks area. All within walking distance of the campus.
Employment across the creative sector and in creative roles has grown at double the rate of the economy and provides around two million jobs. The government views creative industries as an important growth area. Within this promising environment the School of Art, Design and Performance offers aspiring creatives an exciting choice of courses designed to provide students with a competitive edge. Our innovative and enterprising environment produces students whose hard work, enthusiasm and talent generate successful graduates and industry award winners year after year.
Study takes place within cutting edge facilities, including our £15 million state-of-the-art Media Factory; the new building helps nurture student, graduate and entrepreneurial talent and has strengthened the North West’s reputation as a major centre for job creation within the creative industries. Students are encouraged to undertake work experience and exploit our strong links with leading companies and industry figures to help them pursue their chosen career. Our staff, many of whom have experience in industry, are dedicated and skilled in teaching and learning skills, knowledge transfer with the business sector, and research – much of which is rated internationally excellent (RAE 2008). They relish the opportunity to share their passion and knowledge with new students every year and look forward to meeting you at one of our Open Days where you can discover more about our courses, uni life and visit our facilities.
We design our taught postgraduate courses to extend your knowledge and skills in areas which you may have studied more generally at undergraduate level. Others are conversion courses enabling you to switch your specialism to a new area away from your work experience or first degree. Many courses incorporate a taught element with individual study, plus a dissertation or short research project. You will be required to undertake an in-depth study of a specialised topic and demonstrate the ability to present your knowledge by submitting a dissertation or project report at the conclusion of your course. Many full-time courses last for one year, but some are in modular form and can be taken over a shorter or longer period. We also offer some courses entirely by e-learning or distance learning.
