Teaching and assessment

The LLM is studied by distance learning and is fully assessed by coursework and a dissertation. The distance learning mode involves optional attendance at Leicester De Montfort Law School, for a maximum of ten Saturday study days during the period of study. The course is structured in a way that allows you to exit at one of several points, if desired, each with a postgraduate award.

If you love radio broadcasting, Humber’s Broadcasting – Radio graduate certificate program can help you develop the skills to make engaging and entertaining radio. The only program of its kind in Canada, this program helps you become a successful broadcaster. Imagine combining the experience of your undergraduate discipline and life experience with your new-found radio broadcasting skills! Many of our graduates are now household names in their communities and within the broadcast industry.

You will get a real-world taste of what it takes to make good radio. In-depth courses give you hands-on experience in radio writing, announcing, production, management, sales, programming, promotion, market research, interviewing techniques, news and sports writing, broadcast journalism, radio reporting and performing, newscasting, and hosting live news and music programs. You will produce exciting digital content including video and podcasts in Humber’s radio production studios.

The curriculum is designed in collaboration with leading industry experts, ensuring you’re learning current and relevant material. Course content is always updated to reflect current needs, such as the relationship with social media and other new media. Our faculty is comprised of the top performers in their disciplines, shaping what you hear each day on the radio. They are on-air personalities, creative producers, writers, news and program directors and managers, and they want to share what they know with you. Once you have gained a taste of the different aspects of the industry in the first semester, you will choose one of four pathways in the second semester:
• on-air announcing
• news and public affairs
• client services/creative production
• marketing/sales and management.

Your pathway class meets weekly and requires at least one “station operations” lab in the radio station each week. For the rest of each week, you will study together with all other students in the program. Students entering the on-air announcing and news pathways will need high standing in related first-semester courses and will be required to audition.

Hands-on training is provided at Humber’s student radio station, 96.9 FM, which broadcasts to much of Toronto, Peel and York regions. You will create original content in our digital studios and then experience the thrill of bringing it to air to listeners everywhere via FM stereo radio and live Internet streaming.

Work Placement

One of the very exciting aspects of the program is the 160-hour work placement following your second semester. Opportunities are available at radio stations and related media outlets in Toronto and across Canada. We work with you to identify a suitable placement, which is typically unpaid. Many students secure placements in Toronto, southern Ontario and across Canada. Some students find work placements outside Canada. It’s up to you – the skills you learn at Humber will help prepare you for a radio career anywhere in the world.

Our graduates perform daily on hundreds of radio stations across Canada. Our alumni are staff at stations operated by Canada’s leading broadcasters such as Newstalk 1010, CHUM FM, SportsNet 590 The FAN, 680News, CBC Radio One and Radio 2, SiriusXM, and other major market stations such as 660News Calgary, CHED Edmonton and CFRA Ottawa. Some graduates prefer the adventure of broadcasting from smaller markets including Bracebridge, Ontario; Lloydminster, Alberta; Merritt, British Columbia; and Yellow knife in the Northwest Territories!

Radio is expanding: The Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has granted more than a dozen new FM radio station licenses since 2014. Satellite, Internet, pay audio channels, audio and advertising production houses and new media, including podcasting, also require creative employees highly skilled in radio and digital media techniques.

The Certificate in Business Administration Football Industries course provides those who hold an MBA (or international equivalent), with the opportunity to study the MBA Football Industries football-related modules. The modules, which are delivered in partnership with The National Football centre, St George’s Park, focus on aspects of the football industry such as professionalism, business and marketing. The certificate is also suitable for those seeking to work in, or those already working in football, with modules suitable for clubs, governing bodies or related marketing, media and sponsorship companies.

Our partnership enables CBA(FI) students to benefit from the expertise of one of the sport’s biggest governing bodies through guests speakers and practical learning opportunities as well as developing distinct pathways from education into employment. Courses like Sports Operations Management, currently run with the assistance of UEFA, give practical insight into managing some of the world’s biggest sports events.

The FIMBA programme is the top ranked sports MBA in the UK and the top-ranked football master’s in the world (SportBusiness International’s 2015 Postgraduate Sports Course Rankings).

If you wish to gain industry experience our placement scheme will assist you in this. CBA graduates have an excellent record in terms of either gaining employment in the football industry or developing their existing careers in football.

CBA students are taught alongside students studying the prestigious MBA Football Industries (FiMBA) programme. CBA students therefore benefit from this network as well as gaining access to the FiMBA Alumni Network, made up of over 300 graduates, most of whom are currently working in football.

Taken full-time, the programme runs from the end of September to the start of May with a one month break over the Christmas period, and students on average will need to be in Liverpool for one full day a week. Students who already possess football industry experience may instead choose to start the programme in mid-November.

Alongside the taught aspects of the programme, CBA students will also benefit from:

- A comprehensive programme of guest speakers drawn from top football executives throughout the world
- A series of football industry visits and networking events (including a stand at Soccerex’s Global Forum in Manchester)

Throughout the course you gain an understanding of how your chosen area operates in Britain and internationally by examining different examples of journalistic practice. You are able to bring your own experience of journalism in your home country and gain insight into practices in Britain, Europe and the wider world. You study case-studies from regions of the world that interest you in order to compare different approaches to journalism.

Print and online journalism modules prepare you to develop the multiplatform skills to operate effectively as a news and feature journalist in any global newsroom. This means learning to develop a strong news sense, an ability to select and prioritise key facts and quotes, and writing skills for different platforms.

-Develop an understanding of how news is consumed and how to meet the needs and expectations of a range of audiences.

Increasingly, both consumer and specialist and business-to-business magazines attract readers and consumers from across the world. The magazine journalism module develops the skills to enable you to work in one of the fastest growing areas of journalism. You learn the business of magazines – including branding and marketing and use of social media techniques – as well as how to source and write lively and creative features, edit copy and write attention-grabbing headlines and coverlines, and how to design and layout magazines.

Broadcast journalism modules develop your skills in radio and TV broadcasting, and in interviewing and presenting. You produce radio and TV packages in a dedicated TV and radio studio and two dedicated newsrooms.

Alongside practical skills, the course gives you the opportunity to study the ethical, legal and regulatory context in which journalism is practised. Theoretical content deepens your understanding and critical awareness of on-going debates about the economic and political role played by journalists and global news organisations in modern societies.

If you want to work as a journalist in the UK, you may choose to follow a National Council for the Training of Journalists pathway and sit the professional examinations necessary to gain a job in journalism in the UK market. You need an IELTS equivalent of 7.0 to follow this pathway.

Course objectives

A suite of MRes courses has been developed concurrently by six subject areas: Applied Social Science, Education, Communications, Media and Culture, Management, Nursing, Midwifery and Health and Sports Studies. These courses have a shared core of four modules in generic research skills, plus specialist disciplinary modules and a range of options.
They combine high quality with flexibility and choice for students. Employability is another important focus, with the opportunity for a research placement offered to all MRes students.
This course is designed to provide a basic but extensive training in media research methods. The training provided is multidisciplinary, covering social sciences and humanities approaches. Delivery and assessment

The course involves lectures, seminars, tutorials, a research project and case study work. Assessment is by means of coursework as specified for each module and includes essays, a literature review, a research report, a seminar presentation and a media text. A dissertation proposal must be submitted by the beginning of the Spring Semester when supervisors are allocated (you will be expected to stay within the areas of current staff interest and expertise). Each dissertation is approximately 12,000 words in length and may take the form of a written publishable academic article or a project report, depending on its focus.

The MRes provides students with both theoretical and practical knowledge of social science research methods and an ability to apply these to the study of the media. The degree is primarily targeted at students needing research training prior to registration for a higher research degree, such as a PhD. The course also offers an excellent grounding in social science methods which are transferable to media research for industry, marketing and advertising research, production research and wider aspects of social research consultancy. You will use the latest technologies to evaluate building performance, including software to model 2D thermal movement or track moisture.
