With its East-meets-West mixture of tradition and modernity, the city-state of Hong Kong has established itself as an economic powerhouse of innovation and commerce.
A population of 7.6 million people make it the fourth-most densely populated place in the world, a statistic which hasn't seemed to deter the city's almost 47,000 international students from studying at its 20 universities.
Students in Hong Kong enjoy the rich cultural heritage of the 'World City' and are encouraged to understand local and global society through volunteering programmes and other kinds of social engagement.
This page summarises the performance of Hong Kong universities in different global rankings.
The following table gives the six best universities in Hong Kong in 2025, according to global rankings.
This information is based on the latest rankings tables, researched and published by Times Higher Education, QS and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).
Each ranking system uses its own methodology, with different factors having more or less influence on a university's result.

For such a small region, Hong Kong ranks impressively high across the three global league tables.
Of the 20 universities in Hong Kong, five rank amongst the top 100 in the world. The highest ranking, the University of Hong Kong (the city's oldest higher education institution) also ranks at number 6 in the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2025.
Although Hong Kong is now governed by China , the city's universities still reflect much of the educational structures established during its time as a British colony . Most degree programmes are taught in both English and Cantonese, and many universities offer Chinese-language courses for international students.
These universities also boast high employment rates for graduates due to their strong connections with local and international employers in a wide range of areas, such as Business, Architecture, Engineering and Technology.
