Working While Studying (and From Home!): Online Jobs for Masters Students

Working part-time is a great way for Masters students to earn some extra bucks. But, with a higher-level degree comes a busier study schedule, and it can get difficult trying to juggle study and work.

You can look at work-from-home part time jobs that can be easily tailored around your schedule and allow you to work from anywhere in the world. We’ve listed some popular online jobs for students to help you get started.

Online tutoring

As an online tutor you’ll be expected to provide academic support to others. You could be tutoring in a specific subject (one that you have expertise in) or provide more generic help, for example with preparing for university entrance exams and language tests. You can find openings on platforms like mytutor or you might be able to tutor students at your own university!

Online writing and editing

If you can easily put ideas into words, then a writing or editing job might be for you! Online writers are usually involved in researching and writing content for websites or blogs, whereas as an editor you’ll be proofreading or copyediting work written by others. Editing is a good option for anyone with some writing experience under their belt.

You can find work on global platforms like Upwork.

Online translators

If you speak a second language, you could make a great candidate for the job of a translator. A great option for international students, you’ll be required to translate written or spoken content to or from your native language. You could be translating articles, blogs and websites. Sometimes, companies hire academic translators to translate research documents. Plus, getting comfortable with academic writing will come in handy when writing your own Masters dissertation.

Data entry

Working in data entry, you’ll be asked to enter data into spreadsheets and databases. You could be converting paper forms, invoices and receipts into digital spreadsheets or transcribing audio files into written documents. If you’re good at typing and pay attention to detail, you might be suited for a job in data entry.

You can find work on global platforms like Upwork.

Graphic designers and illustrators

For the more creative among you, there is graphic design! You could be working on creating logos, designing social media posts and flyers for events and businesses. You’ll have to be well versed in using the software required for the job (like Adobe). Jobs are listed on online platforms like Upwork or you might be able to reach out to local business to check if they require any such services.

Online professors assistants

This is exactly like working as an academic assistant, but online. You could be grading assignments, preparing for tutoring sessions and responding to emails. Some students like to also use this opportunity to gain work experience while they study. You can check within your own faculty if there are any openings or look at online job listing websites. If you don’t wish to work for academics, you can work as a virtual assistant for businesses and individuals as well.

Things you should be careful about when looking for online jobs

With the ease of working from home and being able to tailor your working hours to your needs, online part-time jobs are popular among students. But there are some things you must be careful about before you start.

  • If you’re using an online platform to find work, make sure they are trusted and have had good reviews from people who have used the platform before.
  • Make sure that the nature and length of the job contract is clearly communicated before you start working. Don’t agree to any job before you are completely happy with it.
  • Be sure that you are confident about the payment methods they use and that they are secure.
  • Beware of job listings that look too good to be true. Read about the job, the pay offered and what you’ll be required to do carefully before signing onto anything.
  • If you’re working in an online job, you may be classed as self employed or as a freelancer. If you’re an international student, make sure that your visa allows such work. Some countries such as the UK do not allow students to work as a freelancer while others, such as Canada, do.
