Top 10 Subjects for an Online Masters

If you’ve ever thought about studying a Masters online, you might be under the (mistaken) impression that distance learning is limited to certain kinds of subjects. You know, subjects that involve sitting in front of a computer for extended periods of time and not a great deal of human interaction.

In fact, you might be surprised by the sheer range of disciplines that can be studied entirely online — including plenty that you wouldn’t necessarily associate with distance learning methods.

At the time of writing, we have over 2,000 online Masters programmes listed on FindAMasters, covering everything from Anthropology to Zoology.

Below you’ll find some of the most popular subjects for online study on our website, each with over 100 courses for you to browse.

You can also check out our detailed guide to online Masters, covering how they actually work.

#1 Business and Management

There are more than 600 postgraduate Business and Management programmes listed on FindAMasters, making this discipline by far the most common for distance learning.

It’s not too surprising when you consider that many (but not all!) of the students on these programmes will be full-time workers for whom the structure of an online Masters is easier to fit around their professional commitments.

These courses range from MBAs to shorter Postgraduate Certificates (PGCerts) and Postgraduate Diplomas (PGDips).

#2 Nursing and Health

We list over 300 online postgraduate programmes in Nursing and Health, covering a wide variety of specialties and qualification types. Whether you’re a current health professional looking to focus on a particular area or someone looking to branch out into a new discipline, you should be able to find something that fits your circumstances and interests.

You can browse full Masters qualifications in various Nursing-related disciplines, as well as shorter PGCerts and PGDips.

Also included under the umbrella of Nursing and Health are subjects like Counselling and Occupational Therapy.

#3 Medicine

Online Medicine programmes are also extremely popular, with more than 300 distance learning courses on FindAMasters. Many of these Masters are part-time, making them ideal for current medical professionals.

A postgraduate qualification in Medicine offers you the chance to focus on one of many specialist areas, including Neuroscience, Physiotherapy and Clinical Dentistry.

#4 Education

With nearly 300 distance learning courses on our website, Education is another popular area for online postgraduate study.

As with the disciplines mentioned above, the flexible nature of a distance learning Masters in Education means that it’s easier to fit around the commitments of a teacher. This means that many of the online courses are academic MAs and MScs designed to build on the existing expertise of an educational professional.

It’s also possible to study an online PGCE. Sometimes known as an iPGCE or an International PGCE, these qualifications are ideal for trainee teachers outside the UK.

#5 Engineering

We currently have around 170 online Engineering Masters courses listed on our website, covering most branches of this popular discipline.

Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering are some of the most common kinds of distance learning Engineering Masters, but there are plenty of other specialist subject areas available.

#6 Politics and Government

Distance learning is a common way to study a Masters in Politics and Government (there are more than 150 such programmes on FindAMasters!).

There’s a diverse range of specialisms to tackle, from Development Studies to International Relations and Public Policy — perfect if you want to make a difference from wherever you are in the world.

#7 Law

There are several different kinds of legal qualifications that you can study entirely online. One of the most well-known is the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL), which acts as a conversion course for non-Law graduates to begin their legal career.

It’s also possible to study the Legal Practice Course (LPC) part-time and via distance learning — an important step on the way to becoming a qualified lawyer.

#8 Computer Science

Computer Science is a fairly obvious candidate for online study and distance learning, and we have around 150 courses listed on our website covering a whole range of specialisms and qualification types.

You’ll find that some programmes are geared towards graduates with no previous experience in Computer Science, while others seek to build on existing expertise in certain areas, such as Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence and E-Business.

#9 Psychology

Many kinds of Psychology Masters can be studied online — including conversion courses aimed at those who have a Bachelors degree in an unrelated subject.

There are also plenty of specialisms within Psychology that are covered by distance learning, including Developmental Psychology, Clinical Psychology and Occupational Psychology.

#10 Biological Sciences

Biological Sciences is possibly one of the most diverse disciplines in which you can study an online Masters, encompassing a big range of specialisms.

Molecular Biology, Sports Science and Biotechnology are just a few of the subjects you could study.
