Considering a Masters and not sure what to expect? We’ve asked postgraduate students to share their experiences and tips with you! Lydia Chandler-Hicks finished studying MA Journalism at the University of Sheffield in 2017 and shares her advice.
I didn’t really know what to expect when I started my Masters. I knew I wanted to carry on at university and I definitely wanted to have a go at journalism, you know, do something a bit more industry specific.
My Masters experience has been much more intense than my Bachelors degree. I did an undergraduate degree in English literature so I had like eight contact hours a week, and then I started my Masters. I was in from 8am till 6pm for the whole first term, so it was a big difference, it was a big change.
I love the opportunity it’s given me to try a different subject. I think after doing three years on an undergraduate course, it’s just nice to have a breath of fresh air and have a go at something completely different.
I would say it’s the time management thing. I think finding time to get work experience and apply for jobs whilst you are also revising and doing coursework, that kind of thing, it is tricky for me. I’ve had to up my game in terms of being organised.
I think just making sure that you find time to do other things as well. I think it’s easy to go into a Masters and to be really worried you’re not going to have time to see your friends or go on holiday or you know, just relax as well. I think it’s important to remember that having fun and doing your Masters aren’t mutually exclusive things.
