Postgraduate Study in 2021 – Get Inspired! Reskill and Retrain

Fiona's story. . .

Back in March, Fiona was working a graduate job in her hometown. It wasn’t quite what she had in mind after her degree, but it paid the bills and looked pretty good on her shiny new LinkedIn profile.

Unfortunately, in April, Fiona was put on furlough. In August, she and the rest of her team were made redundant.

Not one to stand still, Fiona started volunteering as an NHS Volunteer Responder whilst doing some remote work as a call handler. She also tried a few weeks of Joe Wicks, but the less said about that, the better.

That was when she began looking to the future and decided that, actually, she doesn’t want to be in the same place in March 2021 as she was in March 2020. She wants to be somewhere better – and she’s got a plan for getting there.

Fiona began looking into postgraduate study options at the University of Wolverhampton after she realised how many of their students were returning to university to reskill and retrain. Virtual events and alumni discussions introduced her to an online postgraduate community that was friendly, supportive, and welcoming. And she wouldn’t have to wait to join it: most of the University’s postgraduate courses are available to start in January.

Fiona has options, she’s got ideas, and for the first time in a while she’s actually a bit excited to see where 2021 might lead.

Why reskill with a postgraduate course?

The first part of Fiona’s experiences are probably familiar to a lot of people right now, but the idea of using postgraduate study to change direction or open up new options isn’t at all fanciful.

Further study takes dedication and effort, but the potential rewards are significant:

  • Postgraduate conversion courses can unlock new career paths in subjects as diverse as Law, Social Work, and Architecture – or even Artificial Intelligence and Data Science
  • On average, postgraduates earn an additional £5,600 per year compared to graduates (LEO)
  • You can now access government-backed Masters loans of up to £11,222

If you decide to study a postgraduate course this coming January, the University of Wolverhampton offers an enormous choice of options to help enhance your CV and career opportunities.
