Why is the UK a Top Study Destination?

Study UK: Discover You is a global campaign that showcases the UK’s outstanding higher education provision and the life-changing opportunities it brings. Launched in 2016, the campaign has engaged more than 50 million people, helping them to realise their personal and professional ambitions. It is delivered by the British Council in partnership with the UK Government’s GREAT Britain campaign.

When considering an overseas study destination, it can be challenging to find a balance between pursuing your personal interests, choosing a degree that will boost your career prospects, and extracting value for money from your studies. Should you choose the highest-ranking institution? Or the one that offers the most opportunities to try out something new? Or should you focus on maximising employability gains?

Why compromise when the UK offers all of that, and much, much more.

Let your full potential unfold

If you want to enjoy world-leading teaching or participate in ground-breaking research, the UK is one of the most exciting study destinations in the world.

For starters, the UK is home to no less than 29 of the top 200 universities in the world, according to the latest rankings, including the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2019 number one – the University of Oxford.

And it’s not surprising why: our progressive approach to teaching is designed to encourage critical thinking and develop your independent analytical skills. This is why the UK produces 15.2 per cent of the world’s most highly cited research, despite representing just 0.9 per cent of the global population. In other words, as a research nation, the UK punches above its weight.

Furthermore, we pride ourselves on helping students throughout their education journey, starting well before they arrive in the UK.

The British Council’s pre-departure briefings and online course ‘Study UK: Prepare to Study and Live in the UK’ ensure that incoming students are ready to hit the ground running, and the comprehensive student support services available at your chosen university will ensure you have access to the help and resources you need. And when it’s time to think about the future, university career centres are there to provide professional advice for a smooth transition.

We like to keep in touch after you graduate, too. Every year, many UK alumni attend our networking events and career development workshops, and there is the opportunity to apply for our prestigious Study UK Alumni Awards to be recognised for your successes. Check out our alumni success stories to see what you could achieve with a UK education.

These are just some of the reasons why we think the UK is a fantastic study destination. But don’t take our word for it – just ask the more than 400,000 international students from all over the world who choose to accelerate their learning and careers in the UK, or the more than 44,000 graduate employers who think UK graduates are among the most employable in the world.

Discover the real you, your way

Of course, studying is not all about books and lecture theatres.

Every university in the UK has a vibrant Students’ Union that offers a wide range of societies. So whether you want to continue an existing passion for football, improve your public speaking skills, or try out something new (did someone say cheese tasting?) chances are there is a society that’s right for you.

If that’s not enough, there are plenty of adventures to be had beyond your university campus. Why not explore the UK’s fascinating historic legacy, or its world-famous music, arts, fashion, film, and sports? There are a wealth of travel destinations just waiting to be discovered, and thanks to the UK’s multi-cultural atmosphere, you can expect a warm welcome wherever you go.

After all, going to university is all about discovering yourself and expanding your world-view.

Make a smart investment

With all that’s on offer, it’s no wonder 90 per cent of international postgraduates are very satisfied with their UK education.

Moreover, compared with other leading international study destinations, the UK’s short, flexible, and diverse courses at Masters degree and PhD level offer postgraduates exceptional value for money. And because you graduate more quickly – often in just one year – you can begin advancing your career and see a return on your investment a lot sooner.

In addition, as an English-speaking country and an international business hub, the UK is the perfect place to polish your language skills and build a network of global contacts. Combine this with a highly-recognised UK qualification and you’ll soon realise that a UK education is a powerful platform to kick-start your future.

So now you know why the UK is a top study destination and why it has such an outstanding reputation when it comes to producing exceptional postgraduates.
