The oldest university in Leeds is the University of Leeds, established in 1904. It is a member of the Russell Group of elite UK Research Universities and is usually ranked in the top 100 institutions worldwide and within the top 20 universities in Britain.

The two other universities in the city are Leeds Beckett University (formerly Leeds Metropolitan University) and Leeds Trinity University.
