Belfast has a long and varied history as one of the most important cities in Ireland. It was a pre-eminent site for shipbuilding during much of the 19th and 20th centuries, being chosen to construct the RMS Titanic along with many other famous vessels. Following the 1921 partitioning of Ireland, Belfast became the administrative centre of Northern Ireland.
