On this course students learn through a combination of advanced research and academic skills. They will also develop complementary applied science skills for practical application within the equine industry. Elements of the course link into a vocational qualification relating to behaviour and welfare assessment of horses.
STUDY MODULES:
Sports Horse Health and Welfare
This module will look at genetics and reproduction, nutrition and disease in sports horses.
Sports Horse Training and Health
Students will look into exercise physiology, injury and therapy.
Ethology and Welfare
Study the natural behaviour and behavioural adaptations of Equidae, as well as measuring different types of behaviour.
Ethics of Horse Use and Consultation
This module investigates the ethical and moral implications raised by human use of horses, and looks into consultancy techniques.
Research Methods and Knowledge Dissemination
In this module you will learn how to plan, write and deliver oral presentations and research proposals. There will also be sessions involving experimental design techniques.
Research (Dissertation) Project
A research project of your choice will consolidate your theoretical knowledge and further develop your practical skills, drawing on the variety of subject areas and techniques studied within the course.

WHERE DO YOU STUDY?
Brackenhurst is a 200-hectare estate in a beautiful rural setting, 14 miles north-east of Nottingham centre, close to the market town of Southwell. Our equestrian centre provides excellent facilities for practical work and will shortly be supported by a veterinary nursing facility. The well-established Equestrian centre with its top-flight instructors, lecturers, facilities and horses, offers some of the best training available in the UK. The centre offers a full range of facilities, including a 60m x 40m indoor school and a 60m x 40m floodlit outdoor arena. There is a full range of stabling for up to 60 horses, a horse walker, solarium, weighbridge, treatment stocks, round pen and crew yards. A variety of forms of livery are available for horses owned by students, allowing them to take advantage of these extensive facilities.
Brackenhurst is well-served by public transport. There is a frequent bus service from Nottingham, and Newark Northgate station is on the high-speed East Coast mainline train service, with connecting buses which stop outside Brackenhurst.
The campus has specialist units for landscape and plant research, animal care, equine science and countryside management. Students have access to both the onsite facilities of a library, careers service, computer suites, café and bar, along with the extensive facilities at the University’s other campuses, at the City site and Clifton.
