Nottingham is an important regional city in the East Midlands of England, around 110 miles north of London. The city is part of an influential northern higher education area, with two local universities and over 60,000 students.

What’s it like to study a Masters in Nottingham?

Nottingham is famous for its associations with the legends of Robin Hood, the outlaw folk-hero said to have lived in the nearby Sherwood Forest (and whose robbing of the rich to feed the poor would make for a slightly unorthodox approach to postgraduate funding).

The city became an important centre of the 19th-century textile industry and retains a heritage district known as the Lace Market that was once the most significant area for lace manufacture in the British Empire. Nottingham’s modern economy is based on business and commerce, with various corporate headquarters in the city.

Postgraduate students in Nottingham have access to a range of historical sites and entertainment venues. If football’s your thing you’ll be able to check out the oldest professional club in the world (Notts County FC).

Or, if you’re interested in sampling some traditional local beverages you’ll find that three of Nottingham’s pubs can trace their history as far back as the 12th century (they also all claim to be the oldest in England – some extra-curricular work for history postgraduates, perhaps?).

Nottingham also offers some excellent music venues, including the Nottingham Arena, the Albert Hall and Nottingham Rock City, all of which host numerous touring artists.

Universities in Nottingham

The largest university in Nottingham is the University of Nottingham. First established in 1881, it is now a member of the UK’s elite Russell Group and typically ranked as a UK top 20 and global top 100 institution. The city is also home to Nottingham Trent University, which can trace its origins to 1843 and is also a UK top 100 institution.

In addition to offering Masters courses at its own universities, Nottingham is close to a number of other English university cities, including Sheffield 32 miles to the north, Derby 15 miles to the west and Loughborough 13 miles to the south.

Careers in Nottingham

Nottingham has a fast-growing economy with a reputation for innovation. Financial technology and life sciences are particularly strong industrial sectors, while several multinational companies are headquartered in the city. These organisations include E.ON, Speedo and Experian, as well as iconic British brands like Boots, Raleigh and Paul Smith.
