Investigative Journalism

Whether as an Editorial Director or a freelance journalist: good writing skills in the digital age is no longer enough to succeed. In the Master programme in Journalism, students are trained not only in journalism, but also develop management and leadership skills. You will also acquire basic knowledge of media economics, learn to screen business models, and develop an entrepreneurial flair.

It also includes a comprehensive journalism education. Based on the findings of empirical social research, communication studies and journalism research, concrete journalistic fields are taught with a practical application. You will put to the test different types of journalism styles through a variety of different media forms and experience how one proceeds through proper research.

Given the increasing merging of editorial topics, journalists are often required to flexibly switch between different subjects and departments. Journalistic content must be technically prepared for each of the various channels such as online, audio or video. At the MHMK, you will work in various disciplines along a comprehensive course of studies and benefit particularly in the field of media projects from the variety of topics at Germany's largest private media college.

Between the second and third semester you will have the opportunity to deepen your skills in an optional practice year, utilizing practical experiences gained from a study in editorial life. When searching for a suitable subject for your studies, you can benefit from the MHMK-practice network. The nationwide network of internship programmes in journalism currently include the television channel Sky, RTL, the Kölner Stadt Anzeiger and the Cologne Express represented. We are constantly adding new partner schools, both within Germany as well as in other countries allowing you to also complete your practical year abroad.
