MA in English Literary Culture: 1880-1920

Course Description

In the forty year period between 1880 and 1920, momentous changes took place in all aspects of British society, as it moved from the certainty and assurance of the high Victorian Age to the uncertainty and excitement of a new modern age.

The key issues covered by this MA programme include: the decline of the countryside and the emergence of new urban and metropolitan cultures; the impact of Imperialism; the social question and the new forms of political expression; new attitudes towards sex, sexuality and gender; literary and cultural influences from abroad; and religion and new forms of faith.
