MSc Network Security

Course Description

The aim of this programme is to provide students with the theoretical and practical skills necessary to pursue careers as network professionals. It is concerned with the design, implementation and administration of high performance computer network infrastructures and includes an examination of the methods, techniques, tools and technologies used to develop such infrastructures. It will include study of Advanced Routing; switching; network troubleshooting and maintenance; research and project methods; professional practice; fundamentals of simulation of computer networks; network perimeter security; MSc Project. Security Technologies.

The programme is accredited by the BCS, the professional body for IT within the UK and a Chartered Engineering Institute.

The BCS develop and maintain standards in educational qualifications that provide an appropriate foundation for those who wish to follow a career in computing or information systems. The programme is recognised as a further learning element for the Chartered IT Professional (CITP), the BCS's own chartered qualification and, additionally, as meeting the academic qualifications required for a Chartered Engineer

On completion of this programme students will be well placed to take the Cisco CCNA Security and CCNP Security -Secure examinations.

Students who are unable to successfully complete all aspects of the Postgraduate Diploma may be eligible for a Postgraduate Certificate. The MSc programme follows on from the PgD and requires the student to research and prepare an individual Dissertation of a substantial nature.

Entry Requirements

An Honours Degree or advanced qualification in Computer Science or cognate discipline from a British University or recognised overseas institution, or industrial experience in Computer Networking and an Honours Degree. CISCO CCNA is recommended.Candidates whose normal medium of education and work has not been English, will normally be required to present evidence of competence in English as demonstrated by a pass at Academic IELTS level 6 (with no element less than 5.5) or TOEFL Internet based test with reading at 22, listening at 21, speaking at 23 and writing at 21.
