Masters in Industrial Design


Course Description

This masters in industrial design strives to train designers who are capable of conceiving products to address a multitude of markets, while retaining solid design principles.

Students will gain experience in product design, from the preliminary concept to its refinement, to the physical and digital representation of the project.

The program develop an approach which stresses the users' experience, as well as the social meaning of the product, and its relation to the designer.

Students are expected to have an open mind, with an interdisciplinary approach to methodology which values their own cultural background, and emphasizes the role of dialogue and mutual exchange in the creative process.

With close relationships to major industrial partners, SPD industrial design students will face challenging tasks that address the relationships with business and organizations in a mature way. Technical training is particularly emphasized in order to build up solid professional groundings. Students can use modeling and computer design laboratories equipment with the most advanced software to further enhance their skill-set.

The course lasts 15 months (from October until December) and is entirely taught in English language.

QUALIFICATION

After passing the final exam, eligible students will obtain a Master’s Degree from IULM and SPD. The Master corresponds to 60 ECTS credits.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL

Founded in Milan in 1954, SPD Scuola Politecnica di Design is the first postgraduate school for design disciplines in Italy. Situated in Milan, the capital of design, Scuola Politecnica di Design pioneered design education thanks to its solid grounding and to its peculiar approach integrating different domains: ergonomics, art, perception studies, semiotics.

Today, SPD is an international laboratory for the exchange of ideas, experience and creativity in order to develop projects. Since its foundation the school has welcomed an extraordinary community of students from various countries and backgrounds.

All courses are taught in a personalized and small learning environment promoting easy contact with the faculty and the staff. Indeed, at SPD every student is followed individually by a faculty formed by designers, professionals from different fields and visiting tutors.

The masters programs offered by SPD are organized in collaboration with IULM University, and award academic degrees recognized by the Italian Ministry of Education, The University and Research MIUR, corresponding to 60 credits under the ECTS system.

The teaching method at Scuola Politecnica di Design is arranged into intensive workshops, studio classes, theoretical lectures, seminars and visits. Research work is carried out in collaboration with leading companies such as Volkswagen, Microsoft, PepsiCo, Heineken, IKEA, Artemide and Poltrona Frau Group among the others.

These projects are deveopped according to an interdisciplinary approach which is a testing ground for the student’s skills, from the concept idea to its execution.

Design Master Scholarships 2016 - Design students make a better world - 5 Awards

The theme of the competition "Design students make a better world". The starting point is the candidate’s creativity to make a better world. To be creative, curious and sensitive can define our own personality and design. New ideas, modern concepts and respect for tradition and the environment can help the world be a better place for everybody. Use your design tools, your independent and qualified point of view to propose solutions, spaces, and products to make the world much better through a new perspective. Candidates must develop the theme related to the postgraduate or master's programe they wish to apply for. A jury of experts will award scholarships to the best works. The deadline for submitting projects is 8th April 2016.Award: 5 full scholarships covering the 100% of the tuition fee of the academic year. Housing and other costs shall be covered by the winners.

Eligibility

Students and professionals from all over the world aged 21 to 44 can participate to the competition. BA Degree or higher – in relevant fields such as Architecture, Design, Visual Arts – or significant work experience in a relevant field (+ High School Diploma)

Application Procedure

Submit the project online (available after registration)
The Candidate will submit up to 5 pictures, scans or drawings of the Concept. Digital images must be supplied in Jpeg 72dpi format with a minimum width of 600 pixel, optimized for the Web (maximum 2Mb file size).
The Candidate can submit a link to a video previously uploaded on Youtube.com or Vimeo.com, or an attachment in .doc .pdf .ppt or .keynote format (maximum 2Mb file size).
