Master of Petroleum Engineering

Course Description

This course provides you with both a multidisciplinary education and hands-on training in petroleum engineering.

Upon obtaining your master degree, you will be prepared to work as part of the upstream oil and gas industry. Units such as formation evaluation, field development planning and petroleum economics will prepare you to get involved in technical and managerial areas in particular.

Professional recognition

Students may apply for student membership of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (U.S). Upon graduation you may apply for active membership of the society.

Career opportunities

Graduates find work as fully qualified petroleum engineers in the upstream oil and gas industry.

Credit for previous study

Applications for recognition of prior learning (RPL) are assessed on an individual basis.


You will be eligible to receive credit for recognised learning for all the units successfully completed as a part of the diploma. If you successfully complete a Graduate Diploma in Chemical Engineering from Curtin with a minimum course weighted average (CWA) of 65%; and score no less than 65% in core areas, you may also apply to enter this course.

International applicants

Minimum English language entry requirements: IELTS Writing- 6.0, Speaking- 6.0, Reading- 6.0, Listening- 6.0, Overall band score- 6.5.

Entry Requirements

Entry into this course is competitive. You must have an honour’s level four-year bachelor degree in a relevant engineering discipline from a recognised university. Candidates who work in the upstream oil and gas industry (with considerable exposure to core technical areas such as drilling, production engineering and/or reservoir engineering) may be considered with degrees in other relevant science disciplines on a case-by-case basis. If you successfully complete a Graduate Diploma in Petroleum Engineering from Curtin you may apply to enter the Master of Petroleum Engineering course.
