[[MPhilStud Master of Philosophical Studies]] The MPhilStud is a 2 year full-time (3-4 years part- time) masters degree, aimed at students who want to undertake further in-depth study and possibly research in the subject. The programme contains taught modules and an element of guided tuition, but provides a deeper grounding in philosophy than the MA Philosophy and allows students time to think out a PhD topic should they wish to progress to a research degree.
The MPhilStud is designed to provide an in-depth knowledge of three areas of philosophy as well the opportunity to engage seriously in philosophical research by writing papers, by presenting one’s own work in research seminars and by writing a thesis.
Students who pass the MPhilStud can apply directly for the PhD which ordinarily then takes one year less than for students without an MPhilStud.
[[PROGRAMME OF STUDY]] The programme consists of two core modules, plus an oral examination and a thesis. In addition, students are offered a range of optional modules from which they must choose three.
[[Research Skills in Philosophy]] is divided into training on generic research skills, e.g. research methodology, project management, a dissertation workshop, and subject-specific skills, developed through a philosophy research student seminar.
[[Philosophy Essays]] develops students’ skills in interpretation, analysis and reasoning by offering the chance to research and write on three areas of their particular interest (from a given list of topics).
