Statistics and Data Mining

Course Description

Degree: Master of Science (120 credits) with a major in Statistics

The rapid growth of databases provides business people and scientists with vast new resources. This programme - on the interface between statistics and computer science - will help students discover patterns and trends in large and complex datasets, and turn data into information and knowledge.

Statistics and data mining is a programme with unique career opportunities. The methods to organise and analyse data are getting more and more powerful, and this makes the synergy between data mining and statistics immensely rewarding. Economic transactions, customer data, individual health records and environmental data are just a few examples of the contents of enormous databases awaiting thorough examination.

The programme prepares students for professional work with data analysis in private enterprises and government agencies. It can also provide an ideal background for students who aspire to pursue a career as researchers in statistics or computer science.

The programme is designed for students with a solid background in statistics, computer science or applied mathematics, and an aspiration to learn more about data analysis. Being at the interface between statistics and computer science, it provides skills that cannot be achieved in conventional discipline-oriented programmes. The focus is on applications of data analysis, but underlying theories are also given considerable space.

Data mining courses, covering prediction, classification, clustering and association analysis constitute the core of the programme. Visualisation, survey sampling and theory of science are also mandatory. Supporting courses and profile courses (in statistics or computer science) and the master’s thesis project enables students to tailor the programme towards specific applications.

Entry Requirements

A bachelor’s degree with at least 90 credits, i.e. 18 months of full-time study, in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics or computer science. The undergraduate courses in mathematics should include both calculus and linear algebra. Undergraduate courses in basic statistics and computer science. A Letter of Intent written in English and a summary of the bachelor's essay or project. If applicants hold a degree that does not include a bachelor's essay or project, their Letter of Intent should describe previous studies and any academic activities that are related to the master's programme applied for.Proof of skills in English.

Course Fees

Citizens from within the EU/EEA and Switzerland: No tuition fees. All others: 95,000 SEK (approx. USD14,000/10,400 Euro) per academic year
