This course is designed for doctors working in primary or secondary care. You’ll focus on developing your clinical and research skills, strengthening your ability to bring about positive change, solve problems and ensure the highest standards of care and safety for all patient groups.

You’ll build your skills in teamwork, best practice and multi-professional working while increasing your understanding of the complexity and global context of modern healthcare. With support from experienced tutors, you’ll explore your own practice while adapting your learning to your own needs and context.

The course will aim to give clinical knowledge and skills to international medical graduates and to introduce them to the culture and practices of NHS. These qualities will enable the students to be commensurate with the requirements of the GMC. Those international medical graduates who are willing to benefit from a research degree after this course are particularly encouraged to apply.

Developed by practising consultants and public-health academics, this course will build on your current abilities as a doctor and enhance your innovation, leadership, and research skills. It will strengthen your ability to bring about positive change, solve problems effectively, and ensure patient safety.

This course has a strong emphasis on the evaluation and development of both clinical practice and research in meeting the needs of all patient groups. You’ll develop your understanding of effective teamwork, best practice, and the multi-professional approach to medicine. You’ll also consider the role of non-technical skills in error causation, and the complexity and global context of modern healthcare.

You’ll be taught and assessed by academic and clinical academic staff. Lectures and seminars will be supported by self-directed study plus structured sessions delivered online and in our Virtual Learning Environment. You’ll be placed in local NHS hospitals as observers. In addition you’ll advance your clinical skills in our state-of-the-art simulation facilities where you will investigate and resolve clinical scenarios while developing your clinical reasoning and critical thinking skills. You’ll be encouraged to engage in debate and constructive argument. You’ll draw heavily on your own experience, critically balancing academic theory with the latest evidence based practice.

You already have a first medical degree, and you’re registered to practice as a doctor in the UK or in your own country. Now you’re looking to achieve a recognised higher qualification which will enhance your career progression and want to learn more about working in the UK NHS environment.

This course will help you to demonstrate a deeper understanding of how to make health care more effective, and so contribute to enhancing your personal and professional development. It’ll help to widen your career opportunities, whatever you seek to do next, by:

- Developing the effectiveness of your clinical practice
- Building your leadership abilities
- Enhancing and evidencing a range of important transferable skills (such as critical thinking, information-handling, ethical/legal analysis, and interpersonal skills).

We have developed this course in partnership with clinicians so that it reflects the demands of modern clinical practice. It also helps to meet continuing professional development (CPD) requirement as laid out by the UK’s General Medical Council (GMC).

We use a range of assessment methods to enable both you and the university to check your progress during your studies and then to ensure that you meet the required standards when you complete the course.

Although they vary, our assessment strategies are all carefully designed to challenge you so that you expand your critical and creative thinking as well as your problem-solving skills. The assessments will enable you to demonstrate that you can synthesise existing knowledge and accumulate new knowledge, and will evidence the development of your professional practice.

On this course, your assessment methods will include objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) and multiple choice questions; a 6,000-word in-depth case study related to your subject specialty; an annotated PowerPoint; a research proposal; a research report; and data analysis.

Please note that you will need to complete all of the above core modules. This course does not have any optional modules. Modules are subject to change and availability.
