Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy


Course Description

This is a two-year, initial Master's programme and can be followed on a full-time or part-time basis.

The MSc in Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy aims to train graduates to conduct evidence-based practice in physiotherapy and to develop expertise in a specific domain of rehabilitation and physiotherapy. Organised in collaboration with other Flemish universities, this programme is highly specialized.

The first master's phase consists of a general, evidence based approach within the various domains of physiotherapy and rehabilitation sciences.

In the second master's phase, the focus is on the knowledge and skills within one of the majors:

Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy for Musculoskeletal Disorders
Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy for Neurological Disorders
Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy in Children
Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy in Mental Health Care
Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy for Internal disorders.

Objectives

Graduates will have a strong theoretical and scientific insight into the field of rehabilitation sciences and physiotherapy. They will possess the necessary skills to plan and carry out evidence based physiotherapy treatment and preventative strategies, including musculoskeletal rehabilitation, paediatric rehabilitation, neuromotor rehabilitation, cardiac/respiratory rehabilitation or psychomotor rehabilitation. Graduates will be prepared to assume leadership functions in the field of rehabilitation and physiotherapy and provide high-quality care.

Certified graduates of the Master of Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy programme will:

- be able to practice evidence-based physiotherapy in a global health care setting,
- be able to develop patient assessment and intervention programmes through clinical reasoning and critical scientific reflection,
- be able to plan and conduct clinical and applied research independently,
- can choose a major in musculoskeletal rehabilitation, paediatric rehabilitation, neurological rehabilitation, rehabilitation for internal disorders or mental health care.

NOTE:
The KU Leuven master programme is to a highly extend professionally oriented. Students should not expect a purely scientific program.

Career paths
Graduates pursue careers as specialised, self-employed physiotherapists or join healthcare teams in hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, centres for people with chronic diseases or psychiatric institutions. Moreover, some graduates work in the field of special education or provide care for persons with motor disabilities. A number of graduates go on to pursue a PhD at the faculty.

Entry Requirements

Direct admission: Bachelor in de revalidatiewetenschappen en de kinesitherapie; Bachelor of Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy. Depending on the student's curriculum, students with a bachelor's degree in physiotherapy will have to complete a preparatory programme to be admitted to the programme.
