This MSc will train you to become an expert in the development and up-front professional use of computer and software systems. Nowadays, these systems are indispensable in nearly all areas of our society: in industry, the public sector, health and many social applications for end users. They are also the most complex systems ever created by humans.
The programme will teach you to specify, design, implement, test and maintain advanced software systems. It will teach you how to handle complexity and how to deal with diverse requirements such as functionality, reliability, user friendliness, security, reliability, intelligence, efficiency and cost.
You can choose between two advanced specialization areas: software security or artificial intelligence. In both specializations you will conduct your own research and develop novel technology, guided by top-experts in the international research community.
This is an initial Master's programme and can be followed on a full-time or part-time basis.
The goal of the program is to educate engineers, specialized in the field of computer science. Within the program, the central key aspects are the acquisition of expert knowledge in one or more subdisciplines of computer science, a scientific approach towards modeling the real world, design and problem-solving, and the development of various intellectual skills that relate to the engineering profession.
At the end of the program, students: - have acquired advanced knowledge and skills in software development, and are able to develop large and complex applications - are specialized in at elast one subfield of computer science: secure software or artificial intelligence - have acquired skills to situate the development of software applications within an economic context - have a scientific attitude and are able to acquire new knowledge independently - have general skills relating to projectmanagement, communication, reporting, and leadership - have insight in the broader societal context of computer science and information technology.
There is a vast, world-wide demand for IT specialists. Highly qualified Masters in Computer Science are highly sought after in nearly all sectors of industry, public services, education and research. Even though Belgium is a small country, there are over 10000 vacancies for IT specialists. The same situation exists in other industrialized countries, but the numbers are higher. There is a broad range of career opportunities including: software architects and software engineers, IT-consultants, security specialists, big data analysts, system managers, IT-managers, researchers, lecturers and many others. The need for experts in the specializations offered at KU Leuven, secure software and artificial intelligence (including big data) is especially high.
