Engineering: Energy

Course Description

This programme teaches you to focus on technological possibilities without losing sight of the environmental and socio-economic aspects of your chosen field. The programme has an international scope and collaborates with partner universities excelling in the energy domain. It is a two-year programme and can be taken in Dutch or in English.

The first year consists of electrical and mechanical engineering courses, as well as more general socio-economic, energy-related subjects and an integrated project. In the second year, you continue your specialisation by, among other things, writing a Master's thesis on a subject related to electrical energy, thermo-mechanical energy or more general technical-economic aspects. You may also participate in an international exchange or do an internship.

This is an initial Master's programme and can be followed on a full-time or part-time basis.


The programme aims to produce engineers with a broad background in electrical and mechanical energy systems able to participate in current design and production activities of advanced systems. They will learn to design, construct and use thermal machines, on the one hand, and will become experts in energy supply in general (technical possibilities and limitations, environmental consequences, economical aspects), on the other.

At the end of the programme, the student will possess:
- thorough knowledge of all basic aspects and methods of electronic information or electronic energy processing on the one hand, and mechanical technology and applied thermodynamics on the other;
- skill in the use of electrical and mechanical energy systems;
- skill in the proposing fast approaching solutions;
- a wide analytical, synthetical problem-solving mind;
- sufficient scientific education to participate in scientific research;
- executive and controlling capacities caused by his/her skills in knowledge transition, his/her social capacities and insight in the ethical, social and economical frame;
- the skill to independently gather new insights, methodologies and results within the discipline and to apply these in research or in a professional context;
- the skill to critically follow the social role of the engineer.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have completed a Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or a highly related field, encompassing a minimum of 180 ECTS credits or equivalent academic qualifications from an internationally recognized university. Applicants must furthermore have taken at least 60 ECTS credits in the area of electrical or mechanical engineering and in mathematics (including calculus, numerical methods, algebra, probability theory and basic control theory) equivalent to at least 30 ECTS credits.The selection will be based on the excellence of the candidates' academic record.
