This Masters by Research (MRes) in Computing is a highly flexible, taught postgraduate programme designed to provide intensive research training, as well as the opportunity to work on a dissertation project under the supervision of experts in your selected area of study.

WHAT WILL I GAIN FROM THIS PROGRAMME?
As a platform for entry into MPhil/PhD study, this programme will provide a strong foundation for a career in research. You will develop in-depth knowledge of your chosen area of Computing and advanced research techniques applicable to that field. In addition, you will develop a range of transferable skills which allow you to work autonomously, demonstrate the ability to plan and manage a substantial research project, and effectively collate, synthesise and communicate complex information.
WHAT WILL I STUDY?
This programme comprises research themed modules and an additional module that can be chosen from a range of options available.
The research based modules will introduce you to a wide range of research methods and methodologies, with a focus on ethical considerations applicable to computing research. You will be supervised and supported through both conducting research and writing a dissertation.
Depending on your module choice, you will broaden your knowledge and understanding of a computing related discipline and will be exposed to leading-edge technologies in the key areas of mobile and distributed computing.
HOW WILL I STUDY?
This programme is largely delivered through one-to-one meetings between student and supervisor. However, there will be some modules based on traditional lectures, seminars and laboratory work. These modules may be delivered weekly, in block sessions, or by some other appropriate arrangements such as audio/video conferencing, online discussions and others. This will be determined by the requirements of each cohort.
WHO WILL BE TEACHING ME?
This programme is taught by highly motivated and experienced academics specialising in different areas of computing. All members of the programme team are active researchers engaged with research projects at national and international level. Some seminars will be delivered by external guest speakers from academia and the IT industry. You will also be invited to attend a series of seminars organised by the department.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
A range of assessment methods will be used on the programme. The dissertation/research project is predominately assessed based on the 25,000-word written thesis. Other modules are assessed through examinations and essays.

To join this programme you should have a first or upper second class honours degree in a Computing related discipline. In exceptional circumstances, students with a lower second with demonstrable knowledge of their subject matter may be admitted at the department’s discretion. Alternatively, BCS Professional Diploma in IT (Level 6) is accepted for entry to this programme.Overseas applicants will be considered on an individual basis and will be expected to demonstrate IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
