PGCE Secondary Modern Languages (Age Phase 11-16) with QTS

Course Description

This programme will equip you with a range of academic, professional and vocational skills, values and understanding required to become a high quality and proficient teacher of languages. A comprehensive programme, this PGCE enables you to learn innovative teaching methods whilst developing your own language knowledge and skills in French, German, Mandarin, Spanish or Urdu.You will also receive support to develop a second language to ensure you have more to offer prospective employers.


If you have a degree, are fluent in French, German, Spanish, Urdu or Mandarin, are enthusiastic about offering secondary school pupils knowledge of other languages and cultures, and wish to learn the latest professional methods to make you a confident and capable teacher, this programme is for you.


You will receive professional training, delivered to the highest of standards, to help you take up your first teaching post with confidence, having experienced the very latest teaching and learning pedagogies.

You can also develop a second language, with dedicated tutoring tailored to your current knowledge level.


A combination of academic study, group discussion and reflection, and practical, work-based learning in the classroom will give you all the knowledge and skills you need to become a creative and innovative teacher. The programme also aims to develop a reflective and a critically analytical approach to education.


You'll spend 26 weeks on placement in schools, colleges and settings, putting your training into practice through assisting in and taking responsibility for classes, and working alongside mentors and peers to further your professional development. Your teaching timetable will increase as your training progresses and you become more confident and competent in the classroom.


A team of friendly, supportive tutors, including specialists in each of the five languages available.


A balanced combination of coursework and observed classroom experience will be assessed against the QTS Standards and academic criteria at Level 7. Various other tasks will enable you to show your competence in ICT and other aspects of language.


Successful completion of this programme will allow you to gain QTS status and progress into employment as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) at secondary school level in Modern Languages.

Entry Requirements

To join this PGCE you should have: A first degree from a UK higher education institution or equivalent qualification; A degree classification at 2:2 or above; GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade C or above (or equivalent qualification); Satisfactory levels of Information and Communications Technology competence; A demonstrable interest in teaching within the curriculum area. Professional Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy must be successfully completed prior to entry. Disclosure and Barring Service Enhanced Disclosure required.
