Simulation and Patient Safety Programme


Course Description

The Simulation and Patient Safety programme aims to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to understand the complex role of human and organisational factors which relate to patient safety.

Simulation is emerging as an innovative way to train practitioners and improve patient safety. Evidence supports the use of good quality simulation to improve patient outcomes and many opportunities exist for evaluating innovative educational techniques and research into the development of simulation strategies. Recent national reports have emphasised the need for; widened access to simulation training, the use of simulation for accelerated learning and the importance of training person-level and system-level human factors to NHS personnel.
Simulation and Patient Safety Programme

This inter-professional course is designed for healthcare professionals who aim to be leaders in patient safety and simulation training in their institutions.

Graduates of the programme will attain the skills required to implement simulation effectively into educational programmes and develop and evaluate evidence based patient safety strategies in their organisations.

Full Time/Intercalated Masters in Simulation and Patient Safety
The MSc in Simulation and Patient Safety is also available as a full time programme, particularly suitable for those undertaking an intercalated degree from either medicine or dentistry. The ‘taught’ modules will be delivered in Autumn and Spring terms and students will be supported by a member of PUPSMD staff, and will be able to attend seminars of the medical education research group CAMERA based at Plymouth University. To enable those intercalating to receive their qualification in time for Foundation Programme applications work on the dissertation will be supported and encouraged at the start of the year with individual academic support and completion of the module on Project Design.
