UC's MBM programme provides management knowledge and skills that will complement your existing undergraduate degree in Science, Engineering, Arts, Education or Law. The teaching pedagogy, balance of subject content and assessment regime are tailored for fasttrack graduates preparing for successful entry and advancement within the global business environment.
MBM students will gain knowledge and develop understanding in the following areas:
* The impact of contextual forces on organisations including legal systems, ethical, economic, environmental, social and technological change issues, international developments, corporate governance. * Markets and customers; the development and operation of markets for resources, goods and services; expectations of customers and equivalent stakeholders; service and orientation. * The concepts, processes and institutions in the production and marketing of goods and/ or services; the management of resources and operations. * The financing of business enterprise or other organisational forms; sources, uses and management of finance; use of accounting for managerial and financial reporting applications. * The management and development of people within organisations: organisational theory, behaviour, industrial and/0r employee relations, human resource management, change management. * The uses and limitations of a range of research methods and/0r techniques, both qualitative and quantitative, and an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses for providing information and evaluating options in an uncertain organisational environment. * The development, management and exploitation of information systems and their impact on organisations. * The use of relevant communication and information technologies for application in business and management within a global knowledge-based economy. * The development of appropriate business policies and strategies within a changing context to meet stakeholders’ interests. * Contemporary and pervasive issues facing organisations including innovation, creativity and enterprise, e-commerce, knowledge management, sustainability, business ethics, values and norms, and globalisation.
Overview The Master of Business Management (MBM) is a generalist taught master's qualification that extensively develops the skills necessary for strategic business management within a global economy. Candidates with a degree from any discipline may apply and no prior experience in Commerce is required. The MBM will guide the student through a transitional understanding of business management structures and commercial practices providing the foundations for the ability to understand, respond, challenge, and lead change.
The Master of Business Management graduate *Demonstrates in-depth knowledge and understanding of current theoretical concepts, frameworks and industry practice within the fields of business and management. *Thinks logically, analytically and critically with respect to the academic and professional literature within the field of business and management. *Plans and carries out independent research that demonstrates critical awareness of academic and professional issues in the fields of business and management. *Synthesizes academic and professional literature and effectively communicate this information and research findings, both orally and in written form, to a range of audiences.
Subjects and courses The 8 courses listed in Group A and one of the courses listed in Group B are core and must be completed. The 9 courses are all 15 points, and must be completed to an overall “B” grade average in order for the student to move on to the capstone Research Project or Internship (worth 45 points).

Career opportunities The qualification exposes students to intellectual breadth across a large number of organisational functions aimed at creating diverse, market relevant, and highly skilled managers who will make an innovative impact on business at a local and global level.
Normally the minimum requirement is a three-year bachelor’s degree from a New Zealand university, or a qualification or combination of qualifications considered to be equivalent.Before enrolling in the course of study for the Master of Business Management degree, every candidate shall have: 1.Been approved as a candidate for the degree by the Dean of Commerce 2.Demonstrated a high proficiency in English. Applicants who speak English as a second language will be required to produce evidence that their ability to communicate in English is of an adequate standard.
