Executive M.B.A

Course Description

DCU’s Executive MBA is accredited by the Association of MBAs, an independent UK-based accreditation body which assesses the quality of MBA programmes worldwide.

Programme Aims and Objectives

The DCU MBA prepares students for the challenges of business leadership in the 21st century. It provides students with an understanding of the various business functions in a manner that allows them to apply the various perspectives of business in the identification and
implementation of business strategy. It is also focused on the enhancement of personal attributes that will equip students to significantly develop their own careers and lead and renew their organisations.

The development of knowledge, expertise and behavioural competencies is an integral part of our MBA. It also focuses on issues of organisational implementation and renewal as well as strategy design. In doing so, the DCU MBA adopts an integrated approach to learning, which
recognises that responses to the challenges of business leadership are found in more than one business perspective.
Our MBA is about situational problem solving. Among other things, it ensures that managers are equipped with the capacity to recognise the significance of a specialist without being overwhelmed by a display of technique. It also encourages participants to undertake “big
picture” analysis, to understand how to harness their creativity and that of others within the organisation and to have the confidence to implement a chosen strategic direction.

Programme Overview

The first year of the DCU MBA develops an understanding of the range of business disciplines and their potential contribution to business leadership. Building on the first year, the second year adopts a thematic, integrated approach, which focuses more specifically on the key strategic drivers of sustainable growth: operational
excellence, product/process innovation and customer intimacy. The final semester caps the programme, with the overarching theme of the MBA – Strategy, Leadership, and Renewal, being specifically addressed. This theme focuses on the unique roles, tasks and responsibilities of corporate leadership and governance in the overall
strategic development, performance and renewal of the enterprise.

Entry Requirements

The programme is aimed at established/mid career business professionals and technical/engineering specialists making the transition to senior management positions. Participants
are drawn from a variety of industry sectors, including financial services, manufacturing and technology, as well as the public and not-for-profit sectors.

Candidates for entry must possess a primary degree at a second class honours level or higher. They must also have at least three years of relevant managerial experience. Exceptional candidates who do not meet these requirements
may be considered for entry. In such cases, candidates may be required to take the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Overseas applicants are expected to have achieved a satisfactory standard in the IELTS English language test.

Programme Structure

The programme is delivered on a part-time basis and begins with an off-campus team-building event. Students undertake four semesters of classes over two academic years. The first semester runs for 12 weeks from the end of September to the middle of December, with written exams in mid-January. The second semester in each term also runs for twelve weeks, beginning in February and ending in late April, with exams in mid-May. In order to minimise the impact on participant’s working arrangements, classes are usually held on one weekday per week.

The Learning Experience

The programme is a leader in post-experience learning where small class size and an active approach to learning create a dynamic, energetic learning context, inculcated by a spirit of inquiry, group learning and participation. In order to engage participants in high level strategic analysis and build personal attributes critical to leadership success, the teaching and learning methods are intensive and challenging, with an expectation of considerable autonomous learning. The process used will be highly interactive and will involve discussions, information assembly by participants, presentations, case studies and practical application. Furthermore, it is recognised that the DCU MBA community represents a potential network of business leaders who have significant potential to add value to the student and to their
contribution to their organisation.

Key Features
• a horizontal (rather than silo-based) perspective on business;
• an adoption of alternative pedagogical approaches and an active approach to learning;
• a harmony of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ skills in the identification and implementation of business
strategy;
• a specific infrastructure which contributes to the building of networks among the DCU MBA community.
