This course is about how to formulate business and managerial problems involving numbers and how to solve them using latest computer tools. The course introduces modeling techniques for resource allocation, operational, and various other managerial problems including some involving uncertainty in numbers. The course will make full use of computer tools (Excel, and Macros) that integrates the knowledge and implementation skills to solve such managerial problems. The course uses a text written by Prof. Rajasekera for Excel; and, the text Managerial Decision Modeling by Cliff Ragsdale, which relies heavily on Excel, for modeling.
Students must have general knowledge on computers and basic understanding of Excel (for those who has no elementary knowledge of Excel, 2010 version, there will be a short training session during pre-enrolment period prior to the beginning of formal classes in the Fall term). General understanding of algebra will also help.
