MS Early Childhood (birth-grade 2) (Teacher Preparation)

Course Description

The Warner School’s early childhood teacher preparation programs prepare individuals interested in teaching children birth through age 8 in NYS public schools and/or other contexts (such as childcare centers and after-school programs throughout the world). Graduates of our program become early childhood teachers who play a pivotal role in the development of young children and lay the foundation for a lifetime of interest in learning.

Children learn more quickly during their first five years than at any other time in life. Early childhood teachers are some of the most important teachers as they help young children develop a love for learning during these formative years that impacts their lives for years to come. They directly impact how their students develop learning skills as well as social and emotion abilities. And, they believe young children are learning every day and they enjoy every stage of early development.

Whether you are interested in working in a public school in NYS, or a community-based early childhood center or a public or private school, or owning your own child care business, our early childhood program will prepare you to work with children from birth to age 8 and to play a key role during the formative years in determining their future.

Interdisciplinary in both content and process, coursework and field experiences prepare our students to have a deep understanding and strong foundation of early childhood development in the areas of language, cognitive, social emotional, and physical development. Throughout the program, they explore current research on early childhood curriculum in the areas of literacy, science, mathematics, and social studies, and they gain a deep understanding of these subjects they teach and the skills and understanding of teaching, learning, and development needed to help all children develop to their fullest potential. They gain a strong understanding of how children develop within the context of a family, community, and society and what impact this has on development, as well as an in-depth analysis of human development during the early childhood years. These experiences prepare dedicated, creative, and motivated teachers who are capable of supporting the learning and growth of young children at whatever rate they are developing.

Our graduates are critically reflective practitioners who understand children and their needs, and they have the ability and interest to see beyond themselves to delve into a young child’s world. They are compassionate teachers who help children make sense of the world around them and support them when they make mistakes. And, they develop meaningful relationships with children’s families and support their learning as well.

At the heart of our work in early childhood education is a commitment to social justice and equity. Our graduates lead efforts to advocate for full inclusion of all students in heterogeneous learning environments that value diversity and maintain high expectations based on students’ individual strengths, needs, and interests.

[[Non-certification program for early childhood teachers:]]
This program has been designed for individuals who are not interested in obtaining or eligible to obtain New York State (NYS) teaching certification – as they are planning to teach early childhood students (between birth to age 8) in international, private or charter schools, or other informal learning settings, such as day care centers, camps, clubs, or after-school programs. As such, this option does not include field experiences or student teaching, and has more flexibility in terms of curriculum and electives.

[[Programs leading to NYS certification in early childhood:]]
To teach in early childhood in public schools in New York State, you need to obtain initial teaching certification in early childhood education (birth to grade 2). Professional certification and a master’s degree are also eventually required. Our Warner early childhood teacher preparation programs will provide you with all the coursework needed to apply for both NYS certifications. Provided you have the necessary content background, our program also allows you to pursue more than one certification at the same time and with minimal additional credits.

A key highlight of our early childhood teacher preparation programs leading to NYS certification is how our faculty integrate urban education into the whole curriculum. We make it a part of every course so that students are equipped and prepared to work in all schools—particularly in some of our most underserved school districts where there is a shortage of high-quality and innovative teachers.

At Warner, you’ll grow into a thoughtful practitioner with a deep understanding of your subject and the best way to teach it. You
will develop an approach that is grounded in current research and authentic practices, that promotes social justice and supports students’ growth and development.
And you’ll do it quicker. A teaching degree from the Warner School can be completed in just 15 months. (Most take two years.) Classes begin in May, right after graduation, and run through the following August. And since New York has some of the toughest certifications around, you can take what you’ve learned just about anywhere.
