MA in Literature and Digital Culture


Course Description

The MA in Literature and Digital Culture aims to develop participants’ understanding of the role of literature in digital culture, examining both the impact of new media technologies on literary form and content and the importance of literature in shaping the contemporary digital landscape.

About this course

The degree will address the cultural importance of digital literacy and explore the changing nature of reading and writing in an age of ubiquitous digitalisation. It will equip participants with an understanding of how digital processes are impacting on and transforming culture which will be invaluable for those wanting to update their knowledge of current digital theory and practice and those aiming for careers in the arts and humanities sectors of the knowledge economy such as teaching, libraries, museums and galleries, media production, etc.
Course Content and Structure

Some of the themes and issues explored on the MA include:

Theorising the Digital – exploring critical theoretical approaches to technicity and digitalisation

Memory, Trauma and the Digital Archive – the impact of technology on the formation and representation of cultural memory

Digital Aesthetics in Contemporary Fiction and Film – how new narrative and aesthetic paradigms in film and literature reflect and inform the transformations of digital culture

Digital Textuality – the changing nature of texts and humanities research methods

Dramatising the Digital – digitally mediated performance, multimedia Shakespeare.

Dissertation/Project

Assessment

Students will be assessed by a wide variety of methods, with a particular emphasis on web-based e-assessments such as wikis, timelines, blogs as well as interactive pdfs and multimedia e-portfolios.

Progression Routes
As a result of their study and experience on the MA Literature and Digital Culture, successful students will be able to progress their academic learning by undertaking further study on Ph.D programmes via the University of Hull or other HE institutions. Potential career roles: teacher, lecturer, education professional, librarian, professional writer, editor or proofreader.
