MA Criminal Justice

Course Description

The primary focus of this Master of Arts in Criminal Justice is to provide individuals with bachelor’s degrees in criminal justice or other disciplines with the knowledge needed to obtain advanced professional positions in the field. It would also enable individuals already employed in the field of criminal justice to advance further in their careers.

Recipients of this degree will have the ability to critically analyze and fairly evaluate situations, programs, and policies. They will also have the skills necessary to convey conclusions and evaluations in a comprehensible manner.
The purpose of an advanced degree program is to pursue a greater knowledge then is possible in an undergraduate program. This program will prepare students to go from the acquisition of knowledge to the application of knowledge. It will provide individuals with the knowledge necessary to solve the problems related to crime and justice within our society. This program is not limited to teaching students stop gap measures for dealing with crime and justice related issues. It does not simply focus on counting the number of crimes occurring at any given time or in any given place but rather the focus is on how to prevent such incidents from occurring in the first place.

[[Will I have internship opportunities?]]
Students may participate in an internship as part of the elective course required for the degree. This is a 3 credit course. Students will be placed in criminal justice agencies.
This course allows students to use their theoretical knowledge in a practical environment. Students are required to spend 150 hours interning in a criminal justice agency or use their current criminal justice work experience to apply theory. They must observe and assist in the everyday operations of the agency. They are required to maintain a log of their activities and confer weekly with the faculty supervisor to discuss their individual progress.

The MACJ degree provides individuals with the knowledge required to obtain advanced professional positions in the field. It enables
individuals already employed in the field of criminal justice to further advance their careers.
Alumni currently hold positions as federal law enforcement agents, corrections officers, higher education emergency management
consultants, probation officers, private investigators and police officers.
This program is appropriate for individuals interested in pursuing an academic career in higher education or those interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in criminal justice.

- Completed Graduate Application
- Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. Sacred Heart University students and alumni may authorize the Office of Graduate Admissions to obtain their official SHU transcripts on their behalf. Contact the Graduate Admissions office for an authorization form.

Entry Requirements

This program is open to recipients of undergraduate degrees in criminal justice as well as individuals who have developed a career interest in criminal justice after completing an undergraduate degree in another discipline.
