Whether you seek to advance your career or fulfill requirements in order to pursue a Ph.D, M.D., D.M.D. or D.D.S. degree, the master’s in chemistry at Sacred Heart University can help you accomplish your goals. You will gain knowledge, tools and skills that translate into real-world results—equipping you to effectively contribute on local, national and international levels.

Designed to support students with varied backgrounds and interests, this program offers you a choice of several options—allowing you to match your schedule with your academic and professional goals. At Sacred Heart University, you can choose from three options:

1. M.S. in Chemistry Thesis Track
Gain experience in modern experimental techniques and deepen your understanding of laboratory operations and computational computer modeling. Working under the supervision of a faculty advisor, you will craft a proposal for your thesis project. Thesis projects typically include approximately six months of research that culminates in a written thesis.
In this program, you will:
• Strengthen your knowledge in the basic areas of chemistry—inorganic, organic, physical, analytical, and biochemistry—and focus your studies in an area of interest
• Conduct extensive research in order to complete your thesis project
• Recognize scientific problems, formulate questions and answers and carry out strategies for solving them
• Improve your ability to understand and apply scientific literature in scientific settings
• Effectively communicate scientific information, in both written and oral forms
• Understand the principles and applications of modern instrumentation, computation, experimental design and data analysis

The Master of Chemistry Thesis Track requires a total of 30 credits.

2. M.S. in Chemistry Non-Thesis Track
Designed for students with relevant industry experience and individuals whose employment or other circumstances preclude them from doing a master's thesis.
In this program, you will:
• Strengthen your knowledge in the basic areas of chemistry—inorganic, organic, physical, analytical and biochemistry
• Become familiar with the recent advances in the chemistry field
• Effectively communicate scientific information, both in writing and orally
• Improve your ability to understand and apply scientific literature in scientific settings
• Culminate by orally defending an exit exam

The Master of Chemistry Non-Thesis Track requires a total of 34 credits for the non-thesis track.

3. M.S. in Molecular Biochemistry Non-Thesis Track
In this program, you will:
- Gain exposure to the major chemistry sub-disciplines
- Learn the chemistry of biomolecules
- Explore state-of-the-art bioanalytical methods
- Attain a comprehensive understanding of computational and traditional methods using the latest equipment and programs
- Focus on hands-on training in molecular biochemistry

The Master of Molecular Biochemistry requires a total of 33 credits.

Part-time and evening M.S. classes for working professionals (thesis and non-thesis track available)

This program will accommodate the busy schedules of working professional by offering part-time and evening classes.

Entry Requirements

‌‎‌‎Applicants should have a strong undergraduate record from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry or related science. Students without a science background are invited to apply; however, they may need to complete prerequisite coursework before being considered for admission. TOEFL or IELTS scores are also needed of you are a non-native speaker of English.

Course Fees

2015/16 Full-time: $8,000 per semester, Part-time: $825 per credit
