Course Description

About the course

This course provides a route to a higher qualification for those who have completed the Legal Practice Certificate (LPC) who want to make their CV more attractive to potential employers. It is also suitable for students who are in a training contract or have qualified as a solicitor, and who wish to develop their knowledge and skills by undertaking research in an area of legal practice relevant to their work.

Teaching and assessment

The teaching of the course mostly takes the form of guided self-study with comprehensive online materials. Guidance comes through interaction with staff via face-to-face, telephone and email communication. Assessment in the Research Methods Module is through a 3,500 word research methods essay and a 1,500 word dissertation proposal. Assessment in the Dissertation Module is by a 15,000 word dissertation in an area of legal practice.

Course modules

Module 1 - Research methods:
To demonstrate your ability to acquire a critical awareness of research methodologies and to appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of various research strategies

Module 2 - Dissertation:
You must also undertake a dissertation, providing an invaluable opportunity to work in depth on a particular aspect of interest. You will need to apply and enhance technical knowledge and critical awareness in a subject of your choice

Graduate careers

This LLM provides an opportunity to examine in more depth with empirical research the developing profession of legal practice, in all its forms.

Entry Requirements

You must have already completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice (LPC) or equivalent qualification. If English is not your first language, an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent is normally required. English language tuition is available both before and during the course if required.
