Environmental Consultancy (PgCert)

Course Description

The emphasis is on providing students with the skills to undertake research and develop professional careers in a wide range of subjects related to the field of environmental studies; water, energy and environment.

There is a growing need for environmental specialists with specific consultancy skills - who are increasingly being asked to provide consultant support to a shrinking public sector.

The course focuses on offering the vital skills for success as an environmental consultant to students who have already completed courses in specialist subjects. It is also relevant to those already working in consultancy, who wish to move from junior to senior consultancy roles. The course is designed around a scenario, e.g. a planning inquiry, select committee investigation or judicial review, concerning a development or concern which requires specialist input.

Each student will be required to investigate the issue/development and then provide written and verbal evidence to a ‘mock’ planning inquiry/select committee/judicial review as an expert witness.

To enable the students to develop such evidence, each week 1 or 2 invited speakers will provide a lecture, seminar or tutorial on their expert topic. Each speaker will be an expert in their field and invited to provide students with real world experience. The sessions will consist of a lecture or talk followed by a structured Q&A discussion with questions provided to the speaker in advance. Topics will include subject areas such as:

• An introduction to programme and project management.
• An introduction to regulation and the regulatory environment.
• Understanding and interacting with the UK planning system.
• Writing and presenting as a consultant/expert witness.
• An introduction to impact assessments - EIA; HEA; SEA.
• Understanding environmental law and policy, and working with legal professionals.

In addition, students will be expected to undertake private study to gather information to develop their proof of evidence and also encouraged to work as a team, holding their own internal meetings as a consultant team would do, to assess progress and ensure evidence is consistent across the team’s research.

There will be one assignment for the course – the provision of written and verbal evidence given at a mock examination in public.

English Language

If you are an international student you will need to provide evidence that you have achieved a satisfactory test result in an English qualification.

The minimum standard expected from a number of accepted courses are as follows:
TOEFL - 92

Pearson PTE Academic - 65

Cambridge English Scale - 180

Cambridge English: Advanced - C

Cambridge English: Proficiency - C

In addition to these minimum scores you are also expected to achieve a balanced score across all elements of the test. We reserve the right to reject any test score if any one element of the test score is too low.

We can only accept tests taken within two years of your registration date (with the exception of Cambridge English tests which have no expiry date).

Career opportunities

By providing the essentials of environmental consultancy as a new PgCert, this course aims to develop underpinning skills vital to consultancy practice. There is a growing need for consultants with in-depth, specialist domain skills rather than those with generalist environmental consultancy ability.
