Course overview

Students complete a series of core modules and a thesis. One of the modules is a marketing consultancy project carried out in teams, while the thesis offers you the opportunity to carry out a company-based project.

Modules

Students complete a series of core modules and a thesis. One of the modules is a marketing consultancy project carried out in teams, while the thesis offers you the opportunity to carry out a company-based project.

Core:
- Managing Brands and Consumer Equity
- Integrated Marketing Communications
- Accounting for Marketing and Retail Managers
- Customer Relationship Management and Customer Experience
- Retailing and Multichannel Management
- Sales and Key Account Management
- Marketing Research
- Marketing Consultancy Project
- Research Methods and Statistics
- Marketing Strategy and Planning
- Digital Marketing and Retail

Individual Project

The culmination of the learning process is your opportunity to undertake a research project, which can be either company-sponsored, or an empirical project in an area of marketing you are passionate about (usually involving direct research with either marketing professionals/managers or with customers).

The project is agreed in consultation with the programme director, and you will then be allocated a supervisor whose expertise lies in the most relevant area of marketing. During your thesis, you will work closely with your supervisor who will support you and provide expert guidance, advice and insights into leading-edge thinking in your subject area. This valuable learning experience will provide you with a thorough grounding in research, reporting and presenting.

Group Project

The marketing consultancy project simulates a real-life consultancy assignment. You will work in teams in a time-constrained environment, competing against your class colleagues to make the strongest marketing strategy presentation to senior executives from partner firms. You will attend a briefing meeting to define the project, research the situation and consider your options. You will then formulate your recommendations and present them to company leaders at the final client presentation. On completion you will receive feedback from your supervisor and an industry expert. Companies that students have worked with in the past have included Google, Cobra Beer, Nike and Nokia.

Assessment

Your progress will be assessed through assignments, exams or both. This encourages you to find your own solutions to problems and breeds a level of pro-activity that ensures you are not just an intellectual, but a highly skilled marketing professional.

Career opportunities

During your course you will receive support and guidance to help you plan an effective strategy for your personal and professional development, whether you are looking to secure your first role in marketing, or wanting take your marketing career to the next level.

I chose Cranfield because if its high rankings.
Life on campus is like a little universe of it own. The academics that taught me and the career service are fantastic. The Cranfield alumni network is very powerful and I am pleased to be part of it.
I did a consultancy project whilst studying with an external client which was great experience.

Allison Alassan

I chose Cranfield for its great reputation which has been formed by the many industry leaders who have studied or worked there. I believe that the knowledge I have acquired will be an invaluable asset to any organisation and be beneficial to my career.
The environment is next-to-none for studying and the lecturers are very experienced. For our group project we worked with a marketing consultancy in London on one of their real-life business problems. Connecting with business in this way brings learning to life.

Miss Yue Zhu

I studied full-time at Cranfield, which I chose because of its good reputation in the field of logistics and supply chain management.
I found its close relationships with industry gave me opportunity to work on real things which bring true value for my future career. The research environment is focused and mature.

Some of my experiences when I was at Cranfield were tough but introduced me to new items like popular topics in industry. I found the time constraints for assignments and projects brought challenges but helped me to improve my own processes to deal with tough times.
I learned how to solve complicated problems in a much more effective way. So, all in all, my course has helped me to be more positive when facing difficulties by teaching me how to get over them.

At the beginning of the year we did group assignments. Then, for my thesis project, I worked alone. My thesis project was sponsored by British American Tobacco (BAT) and focused on a procurement-related topic. The company was very supportive - both regarding my project and my career development. My professor at Cranfield also guided me with clear structure and direction. With their help, I reached outcomes I didn't expect I would be capable of when I first arrived.

James Amos

- Why did you choose Cranfield?

James wanted to join his family’s jewellery company, Boodles, but felt he needed to learn more business skills first. A history degree had been interesting, but it hadn’t prepared him for the business world. Marketing was the main area of interest to him, with brand management of particular relevance.

The reputation of Cranfield School of Management was very important to James in deciding where to study, as was its proximity to London. In addition, it had just launched exactly the course that he was looking for, an MSc in Strategic Marketing.

- What was Cranfield's impact?

James's time at Cranfield provided both a springboard and a reference point for many of the things he has done in his professional life since. The work he did with students from all over the world helped expand his horizons and prepare him for international business. He learnt a lot about marketing, and also improved skills such as how to present in public. Presenting was something James had previously done his best to avoid but now actively enjoys. He also learnt how to prioritise when facing tight deadlines and manage his time more effectively.
