Course Description

Master of Arts (MA)

The MA program is designed for teachers, early childhood educators, and other early childhood education professionals who are interested in pursuing research about young children. The program is a 30-credit research-oriented degree consisting of seven courses plus the thesis/research study. In addition to the three core courses (EDUC 500, ECED 508, ECED 585), MA students are required to take an additional three-credit research methodology course to prepare them for their thesis project (ECED 599, 9 credits).

International Tuition Awards assist international graduate students with their tuition fees if they are registered full-time in research-oriented master’s and doctoral programs.

Value of Scholarship(s)

Up to $3,200 per annum


Students must hold a valid Student Authorization (Study Permit).

Application Procedure

Students do not need to apply, as all international students who are eligible are automatically considered for this scholarship. Awards are assigned on the Student Information System, and, once assigned, can be viewed by logging onto the Student Service Centre.

Entry Requirements

Admission to the M.A. program requires a Bachelor of Education degree or a four-year undergraduate degree in a related field plus experience working with young children in an appropriate setting (a minimum 2-years working experience). In addition, students must have attained a B+ average in third and fourth year-level course work or at least 12 credits of third- or fourth-year courses in the A- grade range (at UBC 80% or higher) in the field of education or in a related field.
