There is great demand for highly skilled graduate training in the areas of Green Biotechnology and Innovation in order to provide bio-based products to replace fossil fuels and meet government targets for carbon reduction. Aberystwyth University is uniquely placed to offer an MSc specialising in the entire supply chain from crops to renewable products combined with research-led teaching in the areas of new venture creation and management of life science firms. This MSc is designed to provide you with the skills and experience for a successful career in biotechnology. This MSc will train students in both the technical knowledge and business awareness required by green biotechnology practitioners and entrepreneurs. The innovative course design encompasses a unique industrial work placement to enhance the learning experience and by providing direct contact with companies will significantly enhance your employability. This hybrid programme, blending green biotechnology with management training, provides students with a competitive edge over a science-only programme.
How is the course structured? The first part of the course is 100 credits of taught modules plus 20 credits of industrial work placement delivered in two semesters running from September to June, followed by a research dissertation supervised by an expert in their field. The dissertation allows you to specialize in, and investigate in depth, an area that excites you. Research can be conducted in the field, in our state of the art laboratories or with a range of external bodies including biotechnology companies, government and non-governmental organisations. Assessment is predominantly by course work such as reports, essays, seminar presentations, journalistic writing and case studies as well as final examinations in January and May. Students on this course will have unique access to the major international initiatives Climate KIC http://www.climate-kic.org. Students on this MSc will uniquely be encouraged to attend ?The Journey?, a 6 week summer school involving approximately 50 students from across Europe, prior to the start of the course. Places on this highly sought after course are exclusively offered, on a competitive basis, free of charge to Aberystwyth students enrolled on the MSc Green Biotechnology & Innovation. This extracurricular course will be highly beneficial for students, providing a thorough context to the MSc as well as networking opportunities. See the Climate KIC webpages (http://www.climate-kic.org) for details.
