LLM Internet Commerce and Law


Course Description

The Aberystwyth LLM in Internet Commerce and Law is a relatively new discipline within law and one which provides you with ample opportunity to explore the fastest growing area of commercial activity and related legal developments. When you choose to study the LLM Internet Commerce and Law, in addition to providing significant academic challenges, you will be equipped you with the necessary experience to succeed in law in this rapidly growing area of commercial law.

On this degree scheme you will study the practical response of the law to the explosion in online trading and commercial activity. You will also assess the adequacy and effectiveness of measures taken at both a national and international level to deal with the novel problems which continue to arise where jurisdictions cross over. In the light of the global nature of this subject, a particular consideration will be given to consistency and the need for a uniform approach between conflicting international interests.

You will benefit from the knowledge and experience of members of Aberystwyth University's Law and Criminology Department who will also guide and encourage you as you tackle your Master's dissertation. Course detail

The LLM in Internet Commerce and Law will challenge you to master one of the fastest changing disciplines within law. Developments in information technology and communications means that the subject of Internet Commerce and Law moves at an astonishing pace – as quickly as new products and programs are created. Your studies at Aberystwyth will equip you to respond to the urgent need for legislation to protect and guide human interaction in the realm of internet commerce.

You will begin by securing a comprehensive grounding in the current legal framework regulating online business interaction before exploring the rapidly developing legal perspectives on digital technologies, rights issues, intellectual property, commerce, product marketing, communication and much more.

An important part of the course is the writing of a detailed dissertation within the specialism of your choice. This is your opportunity to select a project topic which has a direct bearing on your professional life. In completing your LLM, you will have gained a wealth of skills vital for success in legal and more general employment options. For instance, you will become proficient in quickly identify assumptions, evaluating the evidentiary quality of statements, detecting false logic or reasoning, identifying implicit values, defining terms appropriately and stating your case clearly. This course will be particularly attractive to those seeking a career in transnational corporations, specialist online trading, corporate lobby groups, international law firms and a range of governmental and non-governmental organisations.

The Department of Law and Criminology recently participated in the Research Excellence Framework (2014) assessment. It found that 96.5% of publications submitted were of of an internationally recognised standard and that 98% of research activity in the department was rated as internationally recognised.

Assessment

Assessment takes the form of; research proposals including a related bibliographic element, case studies, oral assessments and essays. Each student will complete a Master’s dissertation of 15,000 to 20,000 words which deals with an area of chosen study in the third semester.

Scholarships, each worth £1,000 towards tuition fees will be available for UK/EU students commencing full-time Taught Masters courses in September 2015. Part-time students would be eligible for £500 for Year 1 and Year 2 of their Masters. The scholarships will be awarded for academic excellence (minimum of a UK upper second class honours degree or the equivalent award. In order to be considered for one of these awards, an application for a place on a taught Masters degree at Aberystwyth University must be received by 31st July 2015.

The scholarships will be awarded for academic excellence (minimum of a UK upper second class honours degree or the equivalent award, either already achieved or predicted by the candidate’s awarding university).In order to be considered for one of these awards, an application for a place on a taught Masters degree at Aberystwyth University must be received by 31st August 2015.Up to 72 scholarships worth £2500 towards tuition fees for full-time non-EU students on taught Masters courses are available for students who commence their studies in September 2015 on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Entry Requirements

An Honours Degree 2:2 (minimum). Degrees in law, the social sciences, or other similar subjects are preferred. Those from other disciplines or with suitable professional experience will be considered on an individual basis. Equivalent international qualifications are acceptable especially if ECTS evidence is available. Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) and/or Accreditation of Experiential Prior Learning (APEL) are considered on an individual basis according to current University Regulations.
