MSc in Management

Course Description

This Management programme provides an introduction to finance, human resource management, operational management, strategy, and information management. Management is studied in an international context, reflecting the reality of the global economy. Core subjects are complemented by subject specialization in Term 2. The Programme is for students from a variety of disciplines, not just Management and Business Studies.


The Management programme provides the knowledge and skills required for roles in private and public sector organisations, and covers research methods and a range of management skills to enhance employability, including critical analysis and data evaluation.

This programme culminates with a 12,000 word dissertation on a topic related to one of the degree themes, tailored to your specific interests, and supported by an academic supervisor. It provides an opportunity for original research and effective project management.

Brief Description of Module Aims

Business Information Systems
Aims to develop an understanding of:
- the organisational and managerial foundations of information systems.
- the role played by information systems in organisations, the Internet and digital integration.
- real-world systems, focusing on their relationships to organisations, management, business processes, and ethical and social issues.

Financial Management
Aims for an understanding of:
- financial appraisal.
- financial management and financial reporting and links with accounting, economic and organisational theory.
- company performance through the analysis of accounts.

Management of Human Resources
The module provides students with:
- a knowledge of the Human Resource function.
- a view of Human Resource Management in the context of globalisation, flexibility, and ethicality.

Organisational Analysis
This module provides the student with:
- a review of approaches to the study of organizations.
- a reflexive orientation towards effectiveness of organization theory and management practice.
- knowledge of organisation studies in a social/critical context.

Introduction to Strategic Management
Aims to develop students’ capacity to engage with the:
- theory of strategic management and organisational change.
- theories underlying approaches to strategy formulation and implementation in organisations.
- practice of strategic management using case studies.

Operations and Project Management
This module introduces the student to:
- the objectives and activities of operations and project management.
- a portfolio of techniques for operations and project management.

Qualitative Research Methods
The aim of the module is to develop an understanding of qualitative analysis.

Marketing Communications
This module aims to develop students’ capacity to engage with:
- establishing profitable relationships with customers/stakeholder groups in an age of increasing media specialisation.
- marketing communications: advertising, public relations, sales promotion, personal selling and direct marketing.

Continuity and Change in Organisations
This module aims to provide postgraduate students with:
- an introduction to theories of change as they are presented in management areas (organisation behaviour, strategy and operations).
- theories of organisational change.

Innovation and Technology Management
This module introduces a portfolio of techniques for:
- managing Information Technology, Information Systems and Information Management.
- developing a critical awareness of managing information and technology in modern organisations.

Entrepreneurship and Intrapreneurship
The aim of the module is to:
- develop the capacity to behave entrepreneurially in a globalised world.
- examine intrapreneurship as a way of deploying a similar set of skills to effect change within existing organisations.
- examine how to develop an organisation or become self-employed and skills for operating in an entrepreneurial fashion within organisations.

Philosophy and Process of Management Research
Aims at providing students with a working knowledge of:
- the epistemological and ontological underpinnings of management research.
- locating research material (e.g. journal articles).

Case Studies in Strategic Management
Considers the following issues:
- the strategic management process.
- strategy as a social process underpinning economic performance.
- strategic management; strategic leadership, social responsibility and ethics, the context of strategic management, competitive analysis, strategy in the multi-business firm, disruptive innovation, transformation and renewal and strategic resilience.

Managing Public Finance
Aims for students to achieve comprehensive knowledge of:
- the theory and policy that relate to the management of public finances.
- the economic rationale for government spending together with a financial management perspective on issues such as resource allocation, accountability and value for money.
- global initiatives (by the OECD, IMF, and the World Bank).

There are a number of department scholarships worth £5,000 each, a sum subtracted from the total tuition fee payable to the university.
