Lina Alsharif spoke to us just a few weeks after completing her MSc in Supply Chain and Logistics Management – and she was already looking forward to starting a new job.
“My father owns a logistics company and I worked there as an Intern, which developed my interest in this field. After graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Business Economics, I returned home to Cairo and worked for a couple of companies before joining Ernst and Young in London.
I then wanted to study an MSc to gain a more broad understanding of supply chain and logistics and to build my leadership and management skills. I researched a number of courses in Europe and the US, but WMG’s programme really stood out for me. It was the only one to offer such an in-depth focus on this specialism.
When I arrived at Warwick, I liked the environment right away. It’s very green and everything is there on campus; accommodation, learning facilities, cafes, shops and an arts centre. It’s like a self-contained community, with a focus on learning.
I have to admit that I found the course very stressful at first. You study each module in one week, working full days. But I soon learned how to manage my time and schedule my workload.
Every module of the course was very interesting, and I enjoyed the opportunity to work with fellow students from across the world. The international atmosphere is extremely stimulating. You also make some very good friends!
The most enjoyable part of the course was the interactive element – working on business simulations and real-life challenges. You quickly discover how the theory works in practical terms. It makes everything you learn in lectures real.
My dissertation project focused on supply chain crisis management in Egypt. It was really interesting to look at the impact on business in my home country.
After leaving Warwick, I was ready for another big challenge. This time it was climbing mount Kilimanjaro with friends. It wasn’t just a major achievement, but we raised a lot of money for a children’s brain cancer charity too.
I returned home to Egypt and soon had an interview with with NET-A-PORTER, a leading online fashion retailer. My MSc from WMG came up early in the interview, and it was obvious that this was a major advantage. My qualification definitely helped me win the job.
Ksenia attained her first degree in International Relations, African and Oriental Studies at Ural Federal University in Yekaterinburg, Russia. From 2010 to 2011, she also studied there for a Diploma in Marketing and Logistics Management. This course sparked her interest in logistics, as she explained:
“I really enjoyed the subject and I wanted to learn about it in more depth. After researching option WMG became my first choice for the next step."
The course itself looked right for me – and I particularly liked the way it emphasized the practical as well as the theoretical. The university has an excellent reputation of course, and I'd heard from a friend at Warwick how much he was enjoying his time there.”
Ksenia arrived in to WMG in 2011. She found it challenging at first - learning in English for the first time and also the style of learning was different to that which she had experienced n Russia.
“For every module, there was an intensive week of lectures followed by practical work. This was the big difference for me and there was much more emphasis on the putting the theory into practice than I expected. I soon got used to it though – and it does help you to make sense of all the theory. You can see how it can be put to work to solve problems in real business situations.
After leaving WMG in September 2012, Ksenia continued the job search that she had begun during her time at Warwick. Then in December, she was offered a role with Tools UK Ltd as a Consultant, based in London.
“My MSc definitely helped me get the job,” she said. “In fact, I’d say that it was one of the most important factors. Companies want people who don’t just know the theory, but can apply it in practical situations. I proved to them that I have the tools to do exactly that.”
Before finishing, we asked Ksenia to sum up her Warwick experience in a few sentences. “It was wonderful,” she replied. “One of the most important reasons why Warwick became such a precious place for me is its diverse international environment. It’s filled with amazing people from Asia, Africa, South America and Europe who bring completely different perspectives. Getting to know these people and making new friends all helped me to expand my own personal horizons. It became my second home and I still miss it!”
