After You Graduate
e-BM graduates have an ever increasing range of careers to chose from. Alumni often go into IT and e-business consultancy roles, (both self-employed and in large consultancy groups), into e-commerce companies or enterprises with existing or developing online business initiatives. Many graduates chose to go into media companies or take on digital marketing roles.
I studied me first degree in Film Studies at Middlesex University, whilst also working a part-time job as Assistant Sales and Marketing Manager for a travel company. This really fuelled my interest in marketing and I continued my career in this area once I had graduated.
Why did you decide to study for an MSc?
I had worked for smaller businesses exclusively in the holiday and travel sector and wanted to broaden my knowledge and skills: getting the bigger picture of how e-business is changing the way global organisations work. Why did you choose to study at WMG? WMG’s programme seemed much broader in scope to other courses, covering a diverse range of subjects like finance, supply chain and information systems management. This appealed to me as in today’s job market; employers look for people with a broad range of knowledge.
What were your first impressions when you arrived at Warwick?
I loved the location. It’s green and spacious but with everything you need here on campus. The staff also made us all feel welcome and at home as quickly as possible.
What were your impressions of the MSc programme?
I enjoyed it. The format of an intensive week of study for each module worked well for me. The programme structure means that you have to be able to manage your own time well, which in itself is an essential skill to have once you’re in the workplace. Some of the modules demanded a largely lecture-based approach to teaching. Others gave scope for more team working-based projects. It’s a great learning experience to collaborate with people for all around the world to tackle real-world business problems and develop working solutions.
What was your dissertation subject?
I looked at how small businesses can measure the success of their social media marketing campaigns. At WMG, you work on your dissertation during the course itself, rather than waiting until all of the taught modules are completed. I found this a good way of doing things. The subjects I learned through the programme would feed into my dissertation as I went along.
How would you sum up your experience of WMG?
Outstanding. The programme is geared to the practical application of ideas in the real world. You’re learning the theory but you’re also exploring how that theory can be used to meet today’s business challenges.
When Paulina Rovira-Sanchez joined WMG in September 2009, she didn’t imagine that within a few months she would be presenting at an international SAP conference…
A student on WMG’s e-Business Management master’s programme, Paulina decided to take a SAP Certification course as an add-on to her studies. “I wanted to gain a fuller understanding of how SAP works,” she explained. “It was great to have the opportunity to take the certification course, and I really wanted to do well on it.”
Paulina in fact excelled on the course gaining the highest marks of any student in the UK and Ireland. As a result, she was invited to SAPPHIRE, a conference organised by the SAP University Alliances program. The event attracted over 16,000 delegates.
“It was all about how SAP as an organisation and universities around the world can work closely together to help students launch their careers,” described Paulina. “As well as presenting, I took part in a round table discussion on how to promote collaboration between SAP and educational institutions.”
Paulina found herself chatting through ideas with influential leaders from industry and universities alike. “At first, I wasn’t really sure whether I could contribute much. After all, these were senior level people and I’m just a student! But they were genuinely interested in my opinions and what I had to say. I felt that I was able to make a real impact.”
Paulina described the conference as a highlight of her student experience at Warwick. But going back a little, what made her choose to study at WMG in the first place? “I was working in software development for a digital security company back in Mexico,” she said. “With a degree in Electrical Systems Engineering, I felt that I’d built a sound base of technical skills. I wanted to know more about business though. Specifically, I wanted to gain an understanding of e-business based organisations driving development through emerging technologies.”
After attending a careers fair in Mexico, Paulina decided that WMG’s e-Business Management course fitted the bill. She was impressed by how the programme focused on ‘real world’ situations. “Looking at today’s manufacturing companies and the challenges they face; made it all much more memorable and powerful.”
Paulina described the course itself as ‘challenging and stretching’, but said that the support she received from tutors, staff and fellow students on any aspect of your studies or university life, was incredible.
