You will study the art, literature, philosophy, religion and science of the period c.1300-c.1650, taking a strongly interdisciplinary approach, and learning from academics in the Departments of Classics, English, History, History of Art, Modern Languages and Cultures, and Theatre Studies.
You’ll spend an exciting, full term in Venice, studying the city’s art, history and culture from our base at the Palazzo Pesaro Papafava. The programme includes site visits, study sessions in Venetian workshops and behind-the-scenes visits to the warehouses of Venice’s museums. Modules focusing on Venetian culture, religion and art form the opening term, while during the spring term, you’ll explore the dissemination of Italian culture in Europe. Alongside these modules, we run palaeographical and research skills sessions to help with your dissertation research in the summer. You’ll also have unlimited access to relevant print and electronic resources, including ITER, Early English Books Online, The Making of the Modern World, and European Books, through our library.
Previous graduates from this course have chosen to progress to PhD study at Warwick or another institution, and/or to pursue a career in academia (most recently at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore), museums or galleries.
I graduated from the University of Warwick in 2011 with a Masters in ‘The Culture of the European Renaissance’. Studying at the internationally renowned Centre for Renaissance Studies at Warwick influenced my decision to marry my deep interest in cultural heritage and pursuing a professional career at the National Trust, Europe’s largest conservation charity.
Choosing the Centre for Renaissance Studies and the course was easy; the interdisciplinary nature of the taught MA is unrivalled and the Centre consistently delivers excellent results in its research and teaching quality. In addition, the Centre draws on the expertise from a range of leading Renaissance experts and collaborates with other equally renowned institutions and organisations such as the Warburg Institute in London, Ca’Foscari in Venice, the British Library and the National Trust.
After completing a degree in English at the University of Leicester, I desired to return to an academic environment to pursue my diverse research interests in cultural heritage. However, it was important for me to study somewhere that encouraged both intellectual and personal development. The Centre for Renaissance Studies ensured that the MA provided many opportunities to develop key skills required to pursue further research as well as other professional careers. Soon after graduating from Warwick, I was asked to join the National Trust’s diverse Fundraising team as a charitable trust fundraiser. I soon moved into a major donor role and began managing Quercus an annual giving programme for donors that give £5,000 or more to the National Trust per annum.
The nature of this role is hugely varied: duties range from cultivating gifts from individuals, organising exclusive events (including an overseas heritage tour) to working with the charity’s Trustees and the Senior Management Team. This role requires the highest level of professionalism and the ability to consistently meet high expectations amongst many other skills that were honed at the Centre for Renaissance Studies at Warwick.
Bursary for MA in Culture of the European Renaissance
The Centre for the Study of the Renaissance is now able to bestow two bursaries each of £1200, to applicants of their FT taught MA starting in October 2015. These bursaries are explicitly designed to offset the extra living costs that may be incurred during the Venice term.
