Counselling and Therapeutic Communication with Professional Practice PgDip/MSc

Course Description

Our Counselling Studies and Therapeutic Communication course will help you if you are interested in starting a career in counselling, or want to develop and hone your existing professional skills. The options included enable you to study the niche you would like to work in.
Aligned with this programme, in September 2014, we introduced a Professional Practice programme, which consists of two supervised practice modules. The PgCert/PgDip/MSc Counselling and Therapeutic Communication with Professional Practice, has been designed to contribute to the educational requirements of practising counsellors working towards professional accreditation.

Course detail

- Description -

This is practical programme drawing from applied frameworks in counselling and psychotherapy. It is aimed at assisting students to develop careers in the area. A mandatory part of the programme is to undertake a 100 hour client placement in the 2nd year. The taught component is drawn from an integrative framework and is designed specifically to equip students with relevant practice theory and applications in relation to clinical work with clients. This course may also partially assist students in progressing their membership status with the recognised professional bodies. A key strength of this programme is how the learning is applied to clinical practice.

This course is specifically designed to assist students to develop key counselling and psychotherapy approaches.

- Teaching and assessment -

Lectures, workshops, clinical seminars & tutorials. Portfolios composed of case studies, clinical recordings, placement assessment, supervisors and mentor report. The weekly attendance at university involves a series of specialised clinical seminars focused on critical practice issues An important part of developing competence in counselling is the development of reflective skills, this is facilitated in university by attendance at a process group.

Entry Requirements

Normally a degree (or equivalent) and two years experience in either a professional or voluntary role that involves counselling/ counselling skills. Applicants should possess the personal qualities necessary to undertake progressive counselling training. An interview may form part of the selection process.The closing date for applications is normally 31st July, with interviews for potential applicants scheduled in May and August. Late applications may be considered until 31st August (with applicant interviews in early September). However, where possible applicants should apply before the July deadline.
