Smart Networks (MSc)

Course Description

This specialised Masters programme is unique in Scotland, designed for meeting the increasing business requirements of modern enterprises.

About the programme

Building on your networking and computing expertise, the programme focuses on the latest and emerging smart networking technologies that are creating new opportunities for business, education, research and everyday life. These include cloud computing, virtual networking, data centre management, Internet of Things (IoT), 4G/5G mobile networks, mobile app development, machine-to-machine communications, and data and network security.

The programme aims to produce graduates with the vision, knowledge and skills to apply these latest smart networking technologies to optimise the ICT networking infrastructure for businesses, to design innovative networking solutions, to develop smart networking enabled applications and services, and to research the next generation networking technologies.

Your learning

You will study the key concepts, latest standards, enabling technologies and applications in designing, deploying, operating, and evaluating the emerging smart networks. The programme is practically-focused and boasts a purposely-built specialised smart networking lab including a private cloud platform, advanced wireless/mobile/IoT/UAV networking equipment, a mobile app development platform and R&D testbeds associated with the Centre of Audio-Visual Communications and Networks (http://www.uws.ac.uk/avcn). You will thus gain extensive hands-on laboratory experience in realistic smart networking scenarios.

Computing Masters Scholarships - 20+ Awards

Two of our computing Masters courses for entry in session September 2016 have a limited number of Scottish Funding Council tuition fee scholarships meaning that they are tuition fee free. To be eligible, you must meet the same residency conditions that SAAS use. For further information check out the Student Awards Agency Acotland (SAAS) eligibility criteria page, c.20 . We also are delighted to announce that our new for 2016 Advanced Computing Masters framework has been awarded 12 fully-funded tuition fee scholarships by The Data Lab* for the MSc Big Data for September 2016 entry. This means that for Scottish/EU students aiming to study for the MSc Big Data it will be tuition fee free.*The Data Lab enables new collaborations between industry, public sector and universities driven by common interests in the exploitation of data science. It is one of the eight innovation centres funded by the Scottish Funding Council through the Innovation Centres programme and provides resources and funding to kick-start projects, deliver skills and training, and help to develop the local ecosystem by building a cohesive data science community.[[SAAS Funding]]
Unlike undergraduate studies, only a limited number of postgraduate courses (see list below) are eligible for SAAS postgraduate loan funding for both tuition fees and living costs and the funding package differs significantly to what you might have received as an undergraduate student. Application Procedure

To be considered for either the Scottish Funding Council or The Data Lab scholarships, you should indicate this within the application process. Please note, that if you intend to study for the MSc Big Data you will initially be applying for the Advanced Computing course - you must indicate your intention to select the MSc Big Data stream within your Personal Statement during the application process and that you wish to be considered for the scholarship at that point.

Entry Requirements

Bachelor’s Honours degree (2.2 or above) in networking, computer science, or a closely related discipline from a UK academic institute or an equivalent 4-year international degree qualification. Applicants may also be considered with other academic, vocational or professional qualifications deemed to be equivalent. Overseas students must meet UWS English language requirements.
